Trail Report: Bayfield County, Wisconsin – December 28, 2016

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 1-4″

Date of Report: December 28, 2016

Area Report:

All snowmobile trails in Bayfield County are now officially open.  However, most trails are in early season condition and no trails are actively being groomed.  All riders should exercise extra caution when recreating on the trails at this time.

Riders may experience trail segments with little to no snow, icy or rocky conditions, wet and muddy areas or otherwise very rough riding.  In addition, some of the areas that were impossible to reach after the major flooding and wind events this summer may still have downed trees.  Report any downed trees or unsafe conditions to the Bayfield County Snowmobile Alliance at (715) 969-4150 or email baycotrails@icloud.com.

Please keep in mind that some of these trails are on private land.  Private landowners give us permission to maintain portions of these trails on their property.  If a segment is in poor condition or if riding could result in damage, please refrain from use.  Any damage to the trail system, especially those that exist on private land, will jeopardize our future use privileges and potentially result in permanent trail closures.

For the most up to date trail conditions, including ice crossings over lakes and wetlands, please contact the local snowmobile club in the area you would like to ride.  Grooming will commence once we receive adequate snowfall.

Please stay on the designated trails and routes. Changes to the trail system are marked with signage on the trails so when in doubt, follow the signs.

Trail Report: Lake Gogebic, Michigan – December 28, 2016

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: Moderate

Date of Report: December 28, 2016

Area Report:

We just opened back up for the season yesterday and have not had a chance to get many trail reports in, but have heard trails are fair and trail 1N and 3N have had good reports.    Also heard that Trail 13 out of Bergland is good – just a couple wet spots.     Only challenges reported are 8 heading into Ewen.  Sleds are traveling the lake, however, we recommend extreme caution out there.  We have snow in the forecast for 4 out of the next 5 days with temperatures hovering around the freezing point.  Johndee is calling for of up to 24″ Jan 1-5.   It’s looking good for sledding – get your groups together!

Jim is – as I type – putting the finishing touches on new showers in the Walleye and the Northern!   That makes a total of 7 new showers at the lodge and absolutely no more plastic shower stalls!!    That makes me very happy and Jim extremely tired!   We are now ready for the season – bring it on – and let’s get ready to welcome in 2017!!!

Trail Report: Land O’ Lakes, Wisconsin – December 28, 2016

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 8-10 inches and snow in the forecast–though not a lot

Date of Report: December 28, 2016

All of the Frosty club trails were groomed last night when it was below 0 and things firmed up nicely. Trails are smooth and fast so be careful—especially in the icy corners. There is 1-2 inches of snow in the forecast for each of the next few days which would definitely be welcomed. Almost all riders have commented that the area trails are better than they expected so make plans to spend New Years in Land O Lakes!

The trails may be rough, icy, or wet in some areas. There may be branches and other debris on the trail due to recent wind. The snowmobile clubs were working on getting most of the trails either panned or groomed last week except for some sections of trail where swamps or creeks still need to freeze. There are logging operations underway so be on the lookout for equipment or workers on the trail in some areas.

Trail Report: Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – December 28, 2016

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 6-8 inches

Date of Report: December 28, 2016

Area Report:

Hello Sledders!

The Seeley Hill trails are open and groomers have been out on trails 8, 31, 63 and 77. Trails do have a good base, especially with this frozen rain but are very slippery and we did have lots of wind so if riding please be cautious of down branches. Just a few inches of snow would be great for lubrication.

Spider Lake and most of the Chippewa Flowage lake trails are marked. As always, for your safety please stay on the marked trails.

The Southern part of Sawyer County — the Tuscobia and Flambeau trails are open. *Note the reroute 36 from Flambeau to Price County is the old trail along Highway W, trails 25 and 36 have been packed. Trail 5/27 from Tuscobia south to Rusk Co. line is closed and trail 6 from Tuscobia by Ojibwa north to the Chippewa Flowage is closed as well.

Again, we need just a couple inches of snow to cover the hard base that we have… and with that trail conditions will be good for riding. We will update with any changes. Stay safe and have fun!

Trail Report: Forest County, Wisconsin – December 28, 2016

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 1-3

Date of Report: December 28, 2016

Area Report:

The narrow woods trails are in fair condition with the trails on logging roads in good condition.  Even with the warmer temps and the freezing rain, we actually gained a little over the holidays. Riders reported trails that were groomed after it froze, are good. Trails groomed during the warm weather, froze icy. Definitely worth taking a ride.

Trail conditions will vary throughout the county so please ride safely and responsibly.  Use caution when riding on lakes or frozen water as ice conditions can vary greatly.

The clubs that maintain the Forest County Trail System are made up of volunteers who work very hard to provide the best trails possible.  Please respect them while on the trail and allow them to do their job.  Remember, TRAILS ARE GROOMED DAY AND NIGHT.

Thank you for riding Forest County Trails, Snowmobiling’s best kept secret.

Trail Report: Crivitz, Wisconsin – December 28, 2016

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 3 to 6 inches

Date of Report: December 28, 2016

Area Report:

Well, there are three things that damage snowmobile trails, wind, temperature and sun.  Mother Nature gave us all of them.  After the melt down, our groomers went out to see what they could do.  The result is a lot of bare areas.  Although the trail is basically flat now, we do need some snow.  Some areas are rideable, but then again, you get around the corner and it is not good at all.  Our northern groomer said once you get north of Brandy Wine Lane its better, but you will still run into the occasional bare spots.

This has been a very busy summer and fall, working on permits to improve our trail system.  The Twin Bridge Park area has some huge changes thanks to the Marinette County Parks Department and Wisconsin DNR.  We have been able to take care of a culvert extension along Parkway Road north of County X.  We also, just finished the largest problem area in the park.  The swamp hole coming off the bridge has been rerouted slightly for a much safer trail.  We put in a culvert there allowing our groomers to get through, even early in the season!  Also, north of Twin Bridge Campground, were we had a wetland issue,  thanks to the new landowner, we were able to reroute with few problems to improve that area.  Landowners are such a big part of our trail system.  When you see them, thank them, wave and give them thumbs up!  Remember, use of their property is a privilege, not a right!

The Oconto county area of the trail has had our loyal excavator very busy.  He has bulldozed from Holtz Ranch Road north and over to LaFave Road, then…from Chickadee Road west to Boat Landing 11 Road.  He was even out there on a Sunday, trying to stay ahead of the cold weather.  THANK YOU VERY MUCH…

In addition to the new John Deere tractor that we purchased last year, we have now purchased another New Holland tractor for even better trail grooming.

If you do try to ride…please be careful.  There is a swamp hole north of Bucks Ranch Road on the pipeline.  Snowmobiles can make it through.  There is caution tape there, please be aware.  OUR WATERWAYS ARE NOT SAFE.  We need snow and colder temps.

Trail Report: Conover, Wisconsin – December 27, 2016

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 7″-8″ in the woods

Date of Report: December 27, 2016

Area Report:

Temps fell below freezing by yesterday afternoon & stayed below all day today. The groomers were out last night & really had things smooth & firmed up this morning. We had a dusting to maybe 1/4″ new snow today.

I took a quick 77 mile loop to BJ via 8W, 15N, 6E & 13S. Traffic was light near Conover & significantly higher to the west. Conover trails 8 & 13 were actually good but I am keeping my report conservatively at FAIR because I only rode corridor trails & not every trail got groomed last night.

Twin Haven via the new trail; Trail is nice except for the last 3/4 mile where it turns off the grade. This section must be ridden slowly. For those running along the power lines N from North Twin boat ramp, you now have a stop sign at the grade, E/W traffic has the right of way.

As far as I know the lakes are not marked yet, stay off until they are marked.

News and Reports:

Don’t forget you need a WI trail permit to ride the state’s groomed trail system. Aggressive riding causes more trail damage than slower, less aggressive riding. Until the base gets built up & we get more snow to work with, groomers can only do so much to repair damage.

Trail Report for Tuesday December 27th: With the colder temps that came in yesterday it froze everything. It’s slippery so use caution. We have had light snow over last night and today. He colder temps are suppose to stay through the week which is very good. We are expecting 1-3 of snow for Thursday and 1-2 Friday and Saturday. If we do get the snow then we will be out grooming.
