Trail Report: Price County – Park Falls, Phillips & Prentice, Wisconsin – February 15, 2017

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 3-10

Date of Report: February 15, 2017

Area Report:

Groomer drivers and riders report that the trails are in good to fair condition. There are bare spots, but trails remain rideable despite the warm weather on Monday. The conditions should remain good until the warm weather erodes the snow but that could take most of the weekend.  Road crossings are bare and some road routes are getting bad but overall trails are good.  If snowmobilers are coming up they should ride Friday and Saturday, conditions will deteriorate the longer it stays warm.  From now until Saturday looks good. Hopefully the weather pattern will change and late February and March will provide some good spring riding conditions. The trails remain open through March 31, 2017.

Trail Report: Rhinelander, Wisconsin – February 14, 2017

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 6-10″ in the woods

Date of Report: February 14, 2017

Area Report:

I don’t have a great outlook for the trails currently.  I am hesitant to call this “late” season riding, because it is the middle of February, but the brutal honesty is that there is a significant warm-up forecasted for this weekend.  The affect on the trails will be significant.

In addition to the warm temps, the sun is our enemy.  The trail crossings at the roadways are becoming snirty and bare.  The road routes are melting to the roadways.

The trails are still rideable by all means, they are just not in great shape.  From lack of fresh snow, the corners are becoming icy in some situations.

The conditions will change quickly in the next 4-7 days.  The report will be updated as frequently as the conditions change.

Trail Report: Superior – Douglas County, Wisconsin – February 14, 2017

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 2 to 6 inches in most areas, base icy in most areas.

Date of Report: February 14, 2017

Area Report:

As is typical for this time of year, certain trail segments can be opened and others are not ready yet due to wetland crossings and/or have restrictions due to private land easements.  It is critical that we respect the landowners who allow us to use their property. Please review the information below carefully before trail riding and confirm that you are using open trails.

Please note, in scattered areas the trail base is ice.  Please exercise caution and operate at reduced speeds.

Trail Report 2/14/2017

NE Quadrant
No new snow since 2-7-2017.

Trail 235 is open between 2 (TCC) and 35 (WRT). *PLEASE STAY ON TRAIL! The landowner has made it clear that if sleds do not stay on the trail, then this trail will be closed.

All trails have been groomed since 2-11-2017, except Trail 6 East, Trail 235, and Trail 635.

Trail 1, Bayfield 24, and Trail 4 between 6 West (Big Rock Corner) and Brule was groomed later in the day, however; grooming did not turn out well in the heat.

Conditions in some areas are thin, icy, and better in sheltered areas.  There are some icy corners on Trail 4 and Trail 24.  There are quite a few corners on Trail 27 and Trail 27A where there has been more traffic.

Open areas are deteriorating rapidly with recent heat wave.

NW Quadrant

All winter use trails in this quadrant are open at this time with the exception of Crosstown Route from Tower Avenue to East Second Street and Trail 2 north of Loonsfoot Landing.

Trails are reported to be good for ATV’s and fair for snowmobiles.  Most road routes have melted.

Please note – a disabled groomer is on Trail 2 west of Billings Drive.  The club will be working on the trail as soon as possible.

SW Quadrant

All trails are open at this time, but we anticipate many closures with the current warm temperatures.

SE Quadrant
All trails are open at this time, but all grooming has been suspended and trails are deteriorating due to warmer temperatures.

Trail 217 and Trail 17
Trail 217 – Open with okay conditions at this time.  We anticipate deteriorating conditions with the warmer temperatures.
Trail 17N (Fowlers Circle North) – Trail is open with okay conditions at this time.  We anticipate deteriorating conditions with the warmer temperatures.
Trail 17S (Fowlers Circle South) – Closed for the season due to extensive logging and warmer temperatures.

Douglas County Ski Trails
The ski trails were groomed and tracked the week of February 6th.  Trail conditions are poor at this time due to warmer temperatures.

The Superior Municipal Forest is open and was tracked and groomed on February 9th.  We anticipate deteriorating conditions with warmer temperatures.

We rode through MW, Presque Isle and Boulder trail systems yesterday.  Trails were fair to good.    The Sun was out so exposed sections were getting soft and road crossings were getting snirty.   Today its a bit cooler and mostly cloudy, we had a dusting of snow.  We continue to groom.

Trail Report: Price County – Park Falls, Phillips & Prentice, Wisconsin – February 14, 2017

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 0-10

Date of Report: February 14, 2017

Area Report:

Warm temperatures on February 13 changed our trail conditions from good to excellent to poor to fair.  Most roads are bare, most logging projects are now mud or gravel, in the open areas there are bare spots, creeks are opening up again and we just don’t have enough snow to fix the bad spots.  Clubs are grooming and will be where possible until Friday.  It looks like the temperatures through Thursday will be cold enough to at least keep what we have, but after Thursday conditions will deteriorate rapidly, the weekend looks really bad.  In the Price County Snowmobile Trails Association opinion riders can find trails to ride in the wooded areas but getting there will be a problem.  I would NOT recommend telling snowmobilers to come up for the weekend. Hopefully the weather pattern will change and late February and March will provide some good spring riding conditions. The trails remain open through March 31, 2017.

Some of our motorized trails welcome winter ATV and UTV riders; scroll down for the ATV, UTV & Off-Road Motorcycle Trail Report.

Trail Report: Sayner, Wisconsin – February 14, 2017

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 2 +/- average on the trails

Date of Report: February 14, 2017

Area Report:

Our trails overall average fair to good. Sections with logging operations taking place will be poor. The warm middle 40s yesterday did put a hurt on them. It is not supposed to get much above freezing today with occasional snow showers. Tomorrow (Wednesday) is only supposed to be lower 20s and 30 Thursday. Then Friday and after; middle 40s with a lot of evil sun with rain & middle 40s for the early part of next week. Lets hope they are wrong!

Road routes are thin and it won’t take much more middle 40s with sun to develop large bare sections. Trails close to town will turn extremely snirty and mushy. Southern facing hills will get mushy fast,

We were out every night over the weekend but we had extremely heavy traffic; so by mid afternoon they were already getting pretty beat up. We went out last night and flattened them again.

Please continue to watch for logging ahead signs, heed their warning and obey the posted speed limits.

PLEASE! Lets be careful out there!!!
