Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 4 to 7 inches of base

Date of Report: February 22, 2018

Area Report:

Hello Riders!

We had a great and busy weekend in the Northwoods! Monday and Tuesday we waited patiently as the forecast brought in some much needed snow! Several areas throughout the county received approximately 2-5″ of snow, the center to the northern part of the county receiving closer to the 4-5″. The southern part such as in the Birchwood and Flambeau area received approximately less than an inch. Groomers have been out really working. After the busy weekend and the new snow fall most reports are that the trails are good to very good! There are some reports that bring in a fair trail report due to wide open trails on or near roads that have bareness and ice as some areas are rode heavier than others and need some more snow. There are some icy corners reported, this snow helped with a lot of them but please ride with caution as you may approach others. So to sum up, the majority of the trails are good to very good, more so to the north and on lakes and wooded trails and to the south fair conditions with bare spots until more snow. With that said the forecast looks beautiful!!! Snow for days to come in the next week and a half so this only tells us that the season is far from over! The forecast looks like Thursday could bring 1-3″ and Fri 3-5″!! This will make for fantastic riding!! We will update as the weather progresses and as needed. So load up and get out there! There is lots of season left and good riding to be done! We will also be posting some videos of some grooming with the fresh snow.

An important note for riders this weekend, this Saturday is the American Birkebeiner Cross Country Race from Cable to Hayward! For those that aren’t aware of this race it is the largest and one of the longest cross country ski race in North America. It starts in Cable and finishes on Main Street in Hayward. It is a neat event to witness with a cool history behind it! The Birkie has many miles of ski trails between Hayward and Cable and if you are riding in this area (also known as The Seeley Hills) you will see intersections crossing those trails. Please be cautious and courteous as we want all that out there enjoying the Northwoods beautiful winter to be safe and have a great time! Again, if you encounter the race or are in one of the two towns during give the racers a cheer! We wish all racers the best of luck!

Surrounding counties report to be in good condition so your riding is unlimited!

Thank you again for choosing Sawyer County as your riding destination! The fun continues so gear up and head out and ride!

Thank you to all groomers, club members and volunteers for your hard work to ensure us all of a successful ride!

All of the Washburn County snowmobile trails are OPEN! Trails are in good condition with a 5 to 8 inch base. Sunday evening and into Monday brought a fresh 4 to 6 inches of powder – the new snow is a great addition to the already good base! The base might be a little slim at road crossings as we had a snowy dirt mixture before the new snow. Always use caution on the trails as you may encounter active trail grooming equipment. Enjoy the trails!

THE GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY REPORTS:

We need more snow, however trails are still rated as good. Trails are EXTREMELY ICY so please be careful.

Trail 2 from Hurley to Ramsay US-2 Crossing is good. West of Ramsay Crossing the snow is thin leaving the trail icy please use caution. As you depart Ironwood past Walmart, heading east, the horseshoe-turns around the Transfer Station are getting icy. Please ride to the right and ride cautiously.
The rail-bed trail ENDS on the east side of the Keystone Bridge. The club grooms the bridge to maintain it for local access. The “old” trail to Wakefield is closed east of Verona Road. Tickets will be issued if you ride on this closed trail.

Trail 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield is fair. Around Indianhead near Wakefield the trail is getting thin and icy so please use caution. There have been several near-miss accidents due to riders not riding on their side of the trail or blowing through icy corners. We need everyone to ride safely through there at a reasonable speed to keep everyone safe. The hill climbs to Indianhead Big Snow Resorts are snow packed and smooth.

Trail 2 from Wakefield to Marenisco is good. There is active construction 5 miles east of Wakefield use caution. Watch for icy corners from Wakefield to US HWY. 2 trail crossing. The rail bed section is in good condition, but it needs more passes to get the bumps out. This was groomed on the 20th.

Trail 8 from Bingo’s to Tula Crossing is good to very good. The trail has lots of snow on it and is a wide seasonal county road that is not plowed and makes for a fun trail ride.

Trail 160 from Walmart to Montreal River(WI) is good to very good. This is a very scenic trail with spectacular views. ENJOY!! There is logging near the Lake Road area, please slow down, remember logging trucks have the right of way.

Trail 11S is good to very good. The first 2 miles of the trail as it heads south towards Wisconsin from Trail 2 is plowed due to logging. Please yield to all commercial truck traffic. The trail is in great shape and is groomed from the Vilas County Wisconsin Line to Trail 2 completely, regularly. There are still a few thin areas and areas that need more brushing but the trail is fantastic.

TRAILS FAIR ON AVERAGE

3 degrees at 7:35am with a high of 31 today.  Cloudy all day with a 70% chance of SNOW moving in later tonight.  Today is Thursday which means the Sno-Eagles Guided Trail Rides.  Meet at 9am at the Historic Railroad Depot on the “grade” in town across from Friendship House.

While trails are on average FAIR.  In town, trails that run along side roads on the north side & wide open areas are POOR.  Best riding was the 13N Trails heading way north, Trail 7, 3S-the “grade” heading out of town were GOOD & SNOW covered.  The sun yesterday did not do much to 3S close to town. Have no reports on 3S beyond where the trail crosses Bloom Rd  10E heading east on the south side of the road is not bad either.

Groomers were out last night grooming high traffic trails close to town.  10W/13N to Conover Trail 3 connect; 17N to 3N aka Manske Swamp; 70W/13S to intersection near Honey Bear; 10E to Bloom Rd & 3S.  Plus through town trails.

Trail 1N logging operation continues in the section between the Town of Washington Town Hall & Eagle Lake. With the log piles and icy grainy conditions in that section it would be good to slow down. Minimal grooming due to the logging operation.

Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trails are marked with orange easy to see reflective barrels.  Please stay by the barrels to be safe.  No surface slush.  Reminder that the Catfish Lake Trail that ran from Braywood to Lumpy’s is not open.  Please do not trespass on private land.

Do the Dance!  Want to hear you all the way up here!
See ya on the trails!
