Taconite/David Dill State Trail
Snow: 14-24”
Base: 2-4”
Groomed: Yes
Condition: Fair to Good
The entire Taconite is groomed and in fair to good condition. A few miles toward Ely from the Wolf Track GIA trail is a small area of open water on one side of the trail. Caution signs are up. Use caution in general in swamps and areas with moving water as ice is still thin in spots. Also, the trail base between Tower and Ely is relatively thin, and logging is happening just west of Hwy 1, south of Ely.
The spur trail leading from the Taconite to the Oasis Bar and Grill in Britt has been rerouted due to landowner issues. The reroute goes from the Taconite east of Hwy 53 (opposite side from the Oasis) to Peppard Rd, crosses Hwy 53 at the Peppard Rd Jct, and follows the ditch south to Peel Rd and to the Oasis.

Putnam/Fishing Lakes Trail -is groomed and in fair condition.

Lake Vermilion- Soudan Underground Mine State Park Trail– are groomed and in fair condition.

Tomahawk Trail – From Ely to Knotted Pine is partially groomed and groomers are hoping to have the trails completely groomed before the weekend. Burntside to Mud Lake is groomed but Mud Lake to Vermilion is not. Teams hope to have everything groomed within the next week.

Arrowhead State Trail
Snow: 14-24”
Base: 2-5”
Groomed: Yes
Condition: Fair to Good
The entire Arrowhead is groomed and in fair to good condition. Use caution in the vicinity of the Elephant Creek trail bridge because of thin ice. There is also a small section of open water/thin ice on the side of the trail in the Lost Lake swamp area (just north of Hwy 1). Also, on the Arrowhead Trail North of Hwy 1, a dozer from logging activity has gone through around 2 miles of the trail; use caution and stay on the trail.

VILAS COUNTY TRAILS TO INCLUDE SNO-EAGLES TRAILS ARE OPEN!
Trails GOOD few areas Fair

January 24 2019 7:09am – 12 degrees – High of 16

Tuesday into Wednesday SNOW was about 3 inches east to 2 inches in town.  Then in came the Lake Effect!  Another couple inches east a little less in town.  Another inch forecast for today. So there’s fresh SNOW & time to ride!

SNOW is white & trails are GOOD. “The grade” Trail 13/3 in town is in good shape and so are other open areas.  West is much better with the new SNOW.  Expect the high hill trail on 70W across from the Wisconsin River to thin out as the traffic increases.  Trail 10E between Loon Lk Rd. & Bloom Lk Rd could use more SNOW.  After that section 10E really is some of the best riding! So is heading north & south.  Doesn’t look like any grooming overnight.

Here comes the COLD.  16 below tonight.  Weather guys forecast below zero all of Friday. Below zero every night for the next week.  Single digit above or below zero during the day forecast for the next week.

Here are some cold weather tips.

  • Don’t ride alone
  • Tell someone where you will be riding
  • Dress in layers
  • Stop more often & drink warm drinks
  • Make sure you keep the gas tank full
  • Be sure your phone is fully charged & you have a map

Worth repeating is that:

Sno-Eagles Country has 2 areas that have one-way trails.  10E is a one-way trail from the ERRA Sports Arena all the way out to Nicolet Mini Mart.  The other is the 13’s up near Buckatabon Bridge & Bauer’s Dam area.  Clearly marked with DO NOT ENTER signs.  Plus trail signs are backwards if you are going the wrong way.

EAGLE LAKE TRAIL & CATFISH LAKE TRAIL ARE MARKED & OPEN. Stay by the reflective orange barrels.

See ya on the trails!

Snowmobile Trail Reports:

Red Arrow Snowmobile Trails (Townsend) – It’s 16 degrees in beautiful downtown Townsend this snowy morning. Right now the trails east of Hwy 32 are in good to very good condition. The Nicolet State Trail ( The Grade ) is very icy in spots so be careful! I would say that it is in good to very good condition. The trails west of town toward Hwy 64& T are in good to very good condition on the level trails. In the hills it is still FAIR TO POOR. We still need more snow there for covering the rocks.

Paul Bunyan (Lakewood) – All three groomers were out last night and conditions are great. We wanted to have them totally flat before the snow starts today. Cross your fingers that it happens. Will update snow totals Wednesday.

Chute Pond Snowmobile Trails (Mountain) – 1/15/19 (waiting on new report) Chute Pond trails are open. Trails are panned and in early season condition, meaning to watch for dips and ruts that will need more snow to fill in. There may also be some icy areas. Riding is not advised on the NST south of Hwy 32 to Suring and also the route through Suring to Golf Course Rd due to low snow cover. The pipeline trail may not be groomed until the low spots freeze up more- use extra caution if you ride in that area. Watch for groomers on the trail anytime of day or night, and always yield the right of way to them. Enjoy your ride!

Bagley and Brazeau Joyriders Snowmobile Trails – The B & B Joyriders trails are now all open. We received 5.5 ” of snow the last 2 days The groomers were out all day Wednesday and will be out all day Thursday. The trails that have been groomed last week are in good condition and the trails that have just been groomed are fair to good condition. Remember the trails just opened this year so it’s like early season conditions on 2/3 of the trail. There also is ice under the snow in spots so ride safe.
