Hello Riders!

Last weekend was a great weekend for all snowmobilers and skiers for the Birkie! Groomers have been out this week getting everything back in order!

Questions have arose with the upcoming warmth. As of today, the trail conditions are still great. Many times people see the trails out near and/or on the roads and see them as very dirty and bare. Those trails out on and near the roads do get affected by heavy traffic as they are connectors, and they also get the sand and salt from the road and many times they are in the open and exposed to the sun and elements. Please do not judge the trails system by those few trails. The trails in the woods and on the lakes are still great! They have warmed up a bit during the day the last couple of days and then freeze back over at night so there may be some icy spots but they are still good.

Saturday will warm up with chance of freezing rain. Anything can change but so far that is the forecast. Trails should withstand on Saturday and be more than rideable, but we will have to be patient and see what the weather brings.

Some have asked when our snowmobile trails close. The answer is there is no closure date. At some point when the conditions become un-rideable, lakes become unsafe and the season looks to be officially over the gates on private property will shut, stakes will be pulled from lakes and groomers will be put away. So at this time there is no plan on that yet. We will have to see what the next week brings. March is always kind of a bonus month; sometimes we have snow sometimes it ends abruptly earlier. We hope we have a little time left but March’s weather is unpredictable, we can get a warm up then a snow storm so who’s to say at this point.

In the meantime, ride when you can and stay tuned after the weekend for an update!

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: Happy in the woods, snirty in the sun

Date of Report: March 4, 2022

Snowmobile Information:

Northern Hornshoe Club will be grooming where practical to keep trails happy where we can. Main trails are thin, secondary are Ok to good depending on tree cover. Same story all over. Looks like some rain and snow mix for tonight. John Dee is laid up with pneumonia, so no report from him until he gets sprung from the klink. I am still hoping for a 12″ womper like last year. 60 year old body, and a 12 year old mind. Mark

EAGLE RIVER TRAILS
FAIR on Average
Expect ALL Conditions

March 4, 2022 – 6:40am – 3 below – High 33 – Low 20

Winter weather advisory in effect from midnight tonight until noon on Saturday.  Mixed bag of precipitation.  Snow & sleet.  About 1 inch Snow and 2/10th ice.  What a mess.  Temps up.  A wait & see on how it will impact the trails.

Trails are now in the Adventure Sledding time of the year.  When riding there is every condition out on the trails.  East where I live trails are in pretty good shape from the Sports Arena until getting way out near the Three Lake connect.  Through town trails still have a lot of snow & are better than I thought they would be. South end of the trail to Three Lakes is slim. All in all better than I thought.

Groomer Tracking Systems (GTS) shows groomers back out grooming last night.  ALL Trails in Eagle River system groomed.

The Clubs of Vilas County work very hard to secure easements from private landowners & folks we are losing many due to off trail riding.  So PLEASE NO OFF TRAIL RIDING.

Please remember there are other riders on the trails.  Ride Right to be Safe.

Catfish & Eagle lake trails marked & OPEN. Stay by the orange reflective barrels. Surface slush with the sun is possible. DO NOT think the entire lake is safe.  Several sleds have gone in the water this season far from the barrels.

Please KEEP DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE!  And THINK COLD would be good too!

See ya on the Trails!

Trail Report – : Iron County, Michigan – March 3, 2022

Reporter:Colleen

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: 20 – 30 inches

Date of Report: March 3, 2022

Area Report:

Trails in Iron County currently are in very good condition… trails are groomed and ready for riders.  I haven’t heard of a bad trail yet here in the county this week after getting everything groomed after the snow storm last week.  We certainly are not low on snow.

Trail #2, Trail #16, Trail #116, Trail #113, Trail #111, Trail #18, Trail #15 N., Trail #107 – are in very good condition.

Trail #15 S., is in good condition…. a little more snow is in the forecast for Friday and not sure what Saturday will bring… snow or some rain.  I think the temperature will play a key role in whether it’s snow or rain… looks like we are right on the boarder.  A little rain will not hurt us much with as much snow as we have and the good ice base the trails should hold up fine… cold temps are back in the forecast for the following weekend!

So that’s it for tonight… as always be careful on the trails and try to stay on your side of the trail.

Happy Trails Everyone!!

Reporter:Hodag SnoTrails

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: Hanging in there….

Date of Report: March 3, 2022

Area Report:

Well folks, it’s getting to that time.  ….Late season riding.  Currently, the trails are fair, with some thin corners and exposed roadways will be bare.  Dirty snow at trail roadway intersections.  Some bumps won’t be able to be filled all the way due to lack of base.  Trails get “soft” with sunny days and warmer temps.

The results from the forecast on Saturday…..Rain could be devestating to the trail conditions.   We will have to wait and see how bad we come out of it.

Now the good news….We are in March and still riding!!  Hodags will be continuing to groom on a regular basis as long as temperature and conditions warrant.

The lakes are all marked and not showing any signs of slush. There are multiple roads across Boom Lake so use extreme caution when traveling on that route.

There is one trail closure on the Hodag Sno-Trails system: Trail H4 from Boom Lake to the intersection just north of River Rd. This is basically the “land” route to not running Boom Lake. The trail is closed at this point. We have been just notified that this is a permanent closure. Running the lake is the reroute.

Conditions will change quickly at this point.  We will try to update as they change.

Oneida County trails could stay open until March 31st….conditions permitting.  Time to ride!!

Trail Report – : Spooner and Washburn County, Wisconsin – March 3, 2022

Reporter:Washburn County

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 4-8 inches

Date of Report: March 3, 2022

Area Report:

Washburn County Snowmobile Trails are open at this time.  Trail conditions are good with a 4 to 8 inch snow base.  We are heading into that time of year when you will find variable snow conditions on your travels.  Many trail segments are in excellent condition, but you will find open and sun exposed trail sections that are beginning to turn brown.  This also means you should ride with extra caution, as you are likely to encounter ice patches.

Trail Report – : Sayner, Wisconsin – March 3, 2022

Reporter:SaynerStar Lake Barnstormers

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: Minimal

Date of Report: March 3, 2022

Area Report:

Trails are remaining in overall good condition.  There is a potential for rain this weekend, so conditions will vary depending on what happens.  Right now the hills are getting icy.  Traffic has slowed down quite a bit, so we will be grooming less frequently.  Most sections of our system may only get groomed once or twice weekly.  Hilly sections will be groomed less due to icy conditions and not being able to navigate with the equipment.

If this weekend brings snow instead of rain, it’ll make a big difference in how long the season continues.  Rain instead of snow will most certainly put the end of season in view.

For right now, you can still find some great riding conditions.  We just can’t predict how long they’ll last.

LOGGING UPDATE:  Logging operations have started on portions of our trail 11.  They’ll be logging from Nebish Lake Road to Starrett Lake to Mystery Lake.  IMPORTANT:  Loggers have the right of way.  They have the authority to close our trail, so please be respectful; don’t get in their way and don’t give them reason to shut us down!

Please support all of the clubs by participating in their fundraisers!  Here’s a list of what’s coming up for the Barnstormers.  You can also get more info at http://www.saynerbarnstormers.com.
