Area Report:

Trails did not take the abuse that we thought they might from the weather over the weekend. I had a couple groomers out yesterday and they reported pretty decent trails in the woods. A little icy in some spots. We currently have a couple pieces of equipment broke down and are working on getting those repaired so we can finish up the whole system. We did start some late season brushing in areas we can’t get to in the summer and fall, so you may see some of that going on. Overall definitely still rideable.

Snowmobile Information:

Hornshoe Club removed most of the markers from the Flambeau chain yesterday. Ride at your own risk, and be advised there are quite a few areas with slush. Ice is still good, but there is water on top in places.Trail riding conditions are good, but thin in spots, with a hard shell underneath from the storm this past weekend. We will be running the Arrowhead trail tuner this week to try and forge optimum conditions for this weekend. 38 degrees today but then cold Wednesday through Saturday, with 37 degrees again Sunday. We should be able to womp up some good riding. Ride safe.Mark

March 8, 2022 – 7:03am – 10 – High 37 – Low 14

There was Lake Effect Snow (LES) yesterday until just after lunch. Maybe 2 inches of SNOW. Early the SNOW was wet but by mid morning it was the feathery SNOW.

Today a real pop in temps of 37 then down to 14 tonight. Rest of the week lows 20’s & teens for highs & single digits & some below zero temps all the way until Sunday. Snow forecast of Sunday.

Groomer Tracking Systems (GTS) shows the drivers were out last night grooming. Only trails not groomed were Trail 3 aka Manske Swamp & 17N, Trail 1 to Eagle Lake Boat Launch & 9 Mile Trail which is a spur off of Trail 10E(about 7-8 miles east off of Trail 10E)

As for the trails all conditions. Conditions on all trails change quickly. Was heading home from a meeting last night & saw the groomer out on Trail 10E. He was bringing up loose SNOW so it should be in good shape again. Bloom Rd to Loon Lake Rd section has thin & snirty areas on Trail 10E. Grade heading toward town is in Good shape. Through town it’s mostly covered. Street crossing are wet & sloppy. As for the trails heading north & west all are pretty Good in the woods. Fair & Poor in the wide open areas. Still some pretty icy areas so slow down.

The Clubs of Vilas County work very hard to secure easements from private landowners & folks we are losing many due to off trail riding. PLEASE NO OFF TRAIL RIDING.

Catfish & Eagle lake trails marked & OPEN. Stay by the orange reflective barrels. Surface slush. DO NOT think the entire lake is safe. Several sleds have gone in the water this season far from the barrels.

Please KEEP DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE! And THINK COLD would be good too!

The freezing rain has made the trails very icy and slippery, also the roads are very slick. There is still some good riding in the woods after the groomers break the ice up. Town trails are ice with no lube for slides. Until we get more snow they will slick so be careful and slow down .

Well folks, it is that time. ….Late season riding. Currently, the trails are fair, with some thin corners and exposed roadways will be bare. Dirty snow at trail roadway intersections. The trails came out of Saturday’s rain better than expected. We didn’t lose much base, and the trail bed became hard.

The trails are as flat as they have been all season – that is the “good” news. These are the following criteria that must be taken in accord when riding:

Road routes are thin in areas. There hasn’t been fresh snow in over a week. The sun can quickly melt roadways this time of the year

The trail bed / corners are icy – safety

Currently, the trails are rock solid, slide lubrication can be an issue.

If it wasn’t for those items, I would put them as “good”. But “fair” is the correct assessment in the big picture.

Now the good news….We are in March and still riding!! Hodags will be continuing to groom on a regular basis as long as temperature and conditions warrant.

The lakes are all marked with minor signs of slush. There are multiple roads across Boom Lake so use extreme caution when traveling on that route.

There is one trail closure on the Hodag Sno-Trails system: Trail H4 from Boom Lake to the intersection just north of River Rd. This is basically the “land” route to not running Boom Lake. The trail is closed at this point. We have been just notified that this is a permanent closure. Running the lake is the reroute.

Conditions will change quickly at this point. We will try to update as they change.

Oneida County trails could stay open until March 31st….conditions permitting. Time to ride!!

Snowmobile Report – March 7, 2022
The Snowmobile Trails in Ashland County are Open. Groomers continue to groom after the ice storm this weekend. The report is the trails are in GOOD condition with a 4-8inch packed base. Due to the ice storm, be caution on all the trails, looks out for trees and brush. Watch for machinery on Trail 21-13, south of Cayuga, trail being rebuilt by Forest Service. Detour: Snowmobilers go South on 181-183 intersection and can get on the trail by the little stub off 181 that goes to the trail. Watch for logging where trail crosses Mud Line on Trail 12 (out of Butternut) and CAUTION, keep an eye out for chunks of dirt and rocks. Please stay on the trail. Lots of Ashland County snowmobile trails are on farmers land, please be respectful so we don’t loose our easement to their property. Order your Ashland County trail map today!

From what I’ve been told from the snowmobiler’s that stayed with us this past weekend… the trails are very rideable. We did get some ice and rain on Saturday… but I had people riding Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon. They said the trails are fair to good condition… with exception of watching for ice in the corners. A little less snow of course on the southern trails.. but trails west and north still are covered. So when riding.. please remember to ride a little slower.. watch the corners for ice and try to stay on your side of the trail.

The groomers were pulled off the trails until Wednesday and Thursday of this week… hoping for some new fresh snow…

Hopefully, everything will be groomed by Friday and no more rain until April. 😉

We’ll keep you posted if I hear anything new or different regarding trail conditions.

Boulder Junction Snowmobile Club Trail Report – Monday, 3/07/22:

It’s 22 degrees out with light snow falling this morning. We will have a warm up and sunny skies for tomorrow, but followed by cooler temps and cold nights the rest of the week. Due to the wintry mix over the weekend, we suspended most of our grooming routes, but we did groom 11 & 15S early this morning and will be back grooming on our normal schedule this week. The inclement weather this weekend didn’t hurt our trails that much and they will be in good to very good shape for mid-week riding.

Be safe out there and thanks to all who supported us at our annual Cabin Fever Party this past weekend!

Picked up 3” or so overnight. But unfortunately we are in spring mode already around here weather wise. We had 68F Saturday and thunderstorms. So now we are going through the March roller coaster ride from Mother Nature. It is getting hard to see a scenario where we get trails open again this season unfortunately. Unless something drastic changes with some cold weather and a big snowfall. At this point however that seems very unlikely given the winter that we have had. But check back if things change. I guess you never know!

Snowmobile Information:

More than 300 miles of groomed snowmobile trails lace Barron County, including the popular Tuscobia State Trail with 76 miles heading east from Rice Lake to Park Falls; the Wild Rivers Trail heading north from Rice Lake’s city limits leads 97 miles to Superior.

Barron County snowmobile trails are open and groomed. However, recent freezing rain and warming is taking a serious toll on the snow cover and most road routes are bare, so please ride with caution.
