Trail Report – : Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin – February 28, 2026

Reporter:mcpossin
Trail Conditions: Fair
Snow Cover: Brown in sun to 8" in shade
Date of Report: February 28, 2026

Snowmobile Information:

Yesterday was 50 degrees. Trail Boss Nick reports most of our system is fair to OK. Out on 17 where the sun hits it on 47 is thin to marginal. Saw a lot of trailers headed north today, but not a lot of sled traffic when we headed to Wausau at Noon. There are a lot of ice spots on corners, and some of the straightaways that get sun. Be careful and enjoy what you can. March can be un predictable. Not a lot of snow in the forecast. Ride safe and ride sober! We want you to have fun, but keep it cool. Last day of February & we are still riding.  Yesterday it was warm & evil sun was out most of the day.  Took a toll on open areas, trails on north & west side of roads.  We are riding today. Will head east on Trail 10E as the south side is SNOW covered.  Expecting Adventure Sledding today.  Full report either later tonight or early tomorrow morning.  This IS the weekend to ride even if not perfect. If you ride pick woods trails.  Expect ice everywhere as it went from high 40’s yesterday to single digit overnight.   Mid March brings higher day time temps. So…….this is the weekend to ride!

Here’s a screen shot from GTS – Groomer Tracking System of last nights grooming.  Right click on it for a bigger picture.

Trail 10E to Three Lakes connect; Trail 70W to St. Germain connect; Trail 17/7 off Trail 70W to Sugar Camp connects (7 to Hwy D & 17S to connect along Hwy 17S); Trails 10W/13N through town heading north; WI River Bridge section of 10W/13N & 10W/7 to Sayner & St. Germain.

Lots of grooming with the drivers going out later waiting for the temps to drop.  Again, expect icy conditions.  No higher than 20 today.  Same tomorrow with below zero tomorrow night.

Daily Reminders:

Reminder that Trail 13S does not run all the way to Three Lakes as a portion was closed.  The Club is working on a reroute. Use Trail 10E or Trail 17S to get to Three Lakes.

Eagle Lake was marked by businesses. There are 3 color safety lights at entrance & exit from/to the lake trail. Expect frozen surface slush.  CATFISH LAKE TRL NOT MARKED THIS SEASON.  Do not recommend riding at night as there are areas that are thin or not frozen.

Area Report:

A big thank you to Stephanie & Gil, owners of The Web, for hosting our brat fry fundraiser last weekend.  It was a big success and we appreciate their generosity.

Trails are holding up very well.  The snow we’ve received this past week was mostly dry & fluffy, but we’ll take all we can get.  We are able to keep the majority of our system pretty flat and in great condition.  Of course, the higher traffic areas will get bumpy much sooner, but overall we’re in good shape.  The snow layer on top of our base is getting thin, and you will start to see corners getting icy again.  Some good wet snow would help fix this.  In the meantime, we’re doing what we can to pull snow back onto the trails.

Temps these next few days vary widely with some lows below zero and a high on Friday of 47.  We’ll still be good through the weekend.  It appears that by mid next week, temps are heading back up, so we’ll have to wait and see.  There isn’t much new snow in the forecast.

We hear occasional complaints about the portage (between Star and Plum lakes) being rough.  We do groom this frequently, but not as often as the rest of our system.  The portage is NOT a funded trail, so we do NOT get any funding to groom this.  Every time we go down there, it’s money out of our general fund without any reimbursement.

As I’ve mentioned previously, you will find your best riding in the mornings and early afternoons.  Areas with high traffic can get beat up rather quickly, but overall, there is still some amazing riding available!

Remember, if you aren’t able to keep your sled on your side of the trail as you enter corners, you’re going too fast and putting the safety of others at risk!  You can drive too slow many times, but you may only drive too fast once!  SAFETY TRUMPS EGO!

Ride RIght & Ride Safe!

All in all trails are in great shape everywhere.  Traffic out east continues high.  Riders coming from the East from Three Lakes, Phelps & even Forest county.  Lots heading out to those areas from town.  Same 10W/13N heading north to the Buckatabon/Bauer’s area & 10W/7 after crossing the Wisconsin River bridge.  And yes slush pockets in the bridge area with a bit of water on top of the icy on the approaches.  So SLOW DOWN there as it is slippery. Quieter on 3N, 17N, 70W/17S.  Haven’t ridden those sections in a while hope to ride tomorrow, Friday.

Roller coaster of temps over the next few days. High of 34 with 1/2 inch SNOW.  Low of 6 below.  Then tomorrow way up to 47 & low of 15.  Riding tomorrow afternoon to see what the 47 does to the trails. Then for the next 2 days highs in the teens & below zero at night.  Next week is a mixed bag.  Looks like we could be headed into some Adventure Sledding.  Getting pretty warm if the forecast holds.

Groomers were out last night grooming.  Just a few area not groomed.  Here are the NOT Groomed trails:

13N from west of the WI River Bridge heading north to the Buckatabon/Bauer’s area

Short section of 3 – between 10W/13N & 17N

South trail beyond the turn onto 10E south of town.  This a local trail for those living in that area to get onto the trail system
