Trail Report – : Conover, Wisconsin – January 19, 2023

Reporter:snobuddies

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 12-14”

Date of Report: January 19, 2023

Area Report:

The trails groomed in nice last night. We made a nice flat base for all the new snow that has fallen since 4am today. I have 6-8” of new snow on the ground. Reports say light snow will continue thru today with another 1-3” before it ends. Use caution riding in the fresh snow. It will push out in corners with the nice ice trail base below. Road and driveway crossings will have snow mounds until we go out again tonight and knock them down.
I marked the trails as Good for now, but I’m guessing it will be Excellent riding. I may get out before grooming tonight.

News and Reports:

We have a spot that sleds are riding off trail. This is on Trail 3 where sleds are going past a barrier and caution tape to ride on the ATV trail. We don’t have permissions for snowmobiling on this private land. Please stay on the trail.

If you find a condition that you need to report to the Conover Sno-Buddies like a down tree, water on the trail, etc, either message us on Facebook, use the contact page on our website, or even notify a local establishment. They know how to get a hold of us to fix the issue.

  • A reminder to ride between the orange blazers. Along Hwy K West, there were several 100 trees removed this summer to place new electric poles. Most of the stumps are still there. If you were to hit one, it could ruin your trip quickly. Ride Right ➡️ Ride Safe.

It’s 27 degrees and SNOWING here in Hurley WI !

Snowmobile Information:

We have groomers out in full force again today and tonight, so please watch for them as they watch for you. Watch for changing conditions as the rain early this week finds its way to the low spots and causes all of us problems. We did not see any water problems that we weren’t able to cover with snow yesterday, and our trails are still 100% open. As of today, and with this new snow falling, we are back to GOOD trail conditions (maybe even Great), and will continue to do our best to keep the moguls to a minimum, but the base is still soft.
Please Ride RIGHT, Ride SAFE, and WATCH FOR GROOMERS. And as you enjoy the Iron County trails, make sure to stop and patronize our area Commercial Members! 😊
Enjoy!

1/18/2023

TRAIL REPORT:

Here’s a trail report for today.  One of the groomers went out last night to Marenisco and back to Bessemer.

Today around 9 a.m. all three groomers will be out.

One to trail 8 to Tula and Morgan Mine.  One to trail 11 S and the other is going out on trail 160.

With all the snow stuck on the trees we expect some branches and maybe some fallen trees that will need to be cut up or pushed off the trail.  That’s why we are going out in the daytime so the groomers can see.  Hopefully trails tighten with the temps in the mid 20’s.  Use caution when riding and please give the groomers the right of way.

Lake Gogebic Area Groomers

Jan18th

Groomers are back out expecting 5-8 inches of new snow today into Friday morning.

All trails in the Lake Gogebic Area are reported to be in ok condition;

Jan. 15th

  • 8 West:   there are a couple of open water spots and may open even further with the warmer temps. Culverts were put in but may not be helpful with the weather conditions.  Use Extreme caution.
  • 8 East:   good condition.
  • 102 – Very good condition as groomers were able to get out early this morning and get it packed down before the rain.
  • 1 North:  good condition – some thin spots on the North Portion
  • 1 South reroute:   trail is holding up well and getting better with each pass; watch for open water spots.
  • 13 North:  ok to good condition
  • Trail 100 and 13 South:– keep an out for potential water and potential water holes opening up

Stay off the trails for the next couple of days – and as always please use common sense and caution.   Always ride to the right, and anticipate that there could be a hazard around the next corner and just be safe.

Area Report:

So, with the warmer temps and freezing drizzle we were getting Monday and Tuesday, there was no grooming those 2 nights. Hopefully I’ll be out Wednesday and Thursday nights. Took a look at a couple trails on the east side of town, and they are looking good. I think the rain then freezing temps last night firmed up the base.

It is suppose to start snowing early Thursday morning and continue into Friday. Right now they are saying 2-4″ for our area.

All the trails throughout Washburn County are in excellent condition. Clubs & county staff are reporting a few soft spots due to the warmer weather over the weekend. All of the trails have been groomed at least once since last week. Please continue to ride with caution as there may be limbs/branches along the trails. If there is a major hazard such as large tree branches, in the trail please report that to Washburn County Forestry at 715-635-4490. Ely Area Trail Conditions

January 18, 2023

Active logging is happening in several spots throughout the Grant-in-Aid and State Trail system. Please slow down and give trucks and logging equipment space.

There continue to be a few spots throughout the State and Grant-in-Aid Trail system where ice in swamps is thin, and trails are rerouted due to grooming equipment not being able to cross the ice. Keep this in mind and use caution while riding the trails. Continue to monitor conditions online at https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/snow_depth/index.html

Taconite State Trail: The Taconite is groomed and in fair condition, and it will be groomed again before this coming weekend. There remains one 2-mile stretch of trail ungroomed west of Pfeiffer Lake due to a couple of beaver ponds with ice too thin for grooming equipment to cross. We continue to check ice in this trail segment and will have it groomed as ice thicknesses allow.

Snow: 14-24 inches with a base of 1-6 inches. Groomed: Yes Condition: Fair

Arrowhead State Trail: The entire Arrowhead is groomed and in fair condition. The trail segment between the Landing spur and Myrtle Lake missed grooming this weekend due to grooming equipment issues, but it will be fully groomed again before this coming weekend. Thin ice remains in a number of beaver ponds and swamps throughout the trail. Those spots will be flagged or signed as needed, but continue to use caution and remain aware when riding through swamps.

Along with the DNR trail conditions website, continue to monitor these clubs’ websites (www.ridetheborders.com/trail-report.html & www.snowmobilevacation.org/trail-updates) for the most current Arrowhead State Trail conditions.

Arrowhead Trail Snow: 12-22 inches of snow with a base of 1-6 inches. Groomed: Yes Condition: Fair

Putnam/Fishing Lakes Trails: We anticipate having the Fishing Lakes trail from Putnam Lake to the Taconite Spur (Babbitt trail) groomed by this coming weekend. We are working toward getting the Putnam Lake trail cleared and groomed by next week. The Putnam has a thick brush remaining in a couple of spots, and that is what we need to get cleared before grooming. Use caution riding through the swamps, as the ice remains thin in spots.

Lake Vermilion Soudan Underground Mine State Park Tails: These trails are mostly cleared but not yet groomed. We are working toward getting them groomed by next week.

Babbitt Birch Lake Plantation: Groomed for classic skiing and in excellent. Babbitt golf course is groomed for skate and classic skiing and is in excellent condition.

Bear Head Lake State Park: The cross-country track was set on Friday, January 13th, with good results in the campground loops. The Beach Trail track was destroyed this weekend and will not be able to be reset until we receive snow. The trail base is set up firmly, but the recent winds have littered the forest floor with branches, needles, pine cones, etc. Pay caution while skiing.

Skiing Base: 10 inches. Conditions: Fair. Groomed: Partially. Snowmobiling conditions: Excellent. Groomed Yes.  Base: 8 inches.

Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – January 18, 2023

Reporter:haywardlakes

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 12-16 Inches

Date of Report: January 18, 2023

Area Report:

January 18, 2023

It was a very busy holiday weekend! Fortunately, the rain and warm temps held off until the weekend was over as the combo of the two made the conditions rough. Groomers have not been out the last two days as the temps were warm and conditions were soft so the groomers would just do more damage than help. However, the temps are starting to drop back down to below freezing today and will continue to be below freezing through the week and next week; and the end of next week looks to bring a cold snap which will be great for lakes and wetlands.

Starting today, Wednesday, and this evening, groomers will commence their schedules. The forecast also calls for a few inches of fresh snow on Thursday, which in combination with the snow we already have should make for great trail conditions this weekend.

Lakes have been rough. The heavy snow this season and lack of cold weather has made for rough lake trails and very slushy off -trail situations.  As always, please stay on the marked trails and ride safe from point A to point B. All lakes are staked except for Lake Hayward.  It is not yet staked due to the entrance/exit behind Market Place being open and swampy. However, Sno Mads snowmobile club did push snow into that area and pack it down in hopes it will start to freeze so we will update with that status of that as we monitor. Do note you can still easily get around Hayward without having to go on the lake.

As groomers begin again you can monitor their progress on the GTS app. There are a few hours lag in the app noting newly groomed trails for safety reasons, also some areas are very low in cellular service which is what the tracking systems need so there will be a delay in some areas reporting such as Flambeau Forest area.

Have a great weekend and ride safe! See you on the trails!
