Hello Riders!
It’s been a beautiful week with fresh snow and more grooming time. Groomers have been out this week and it will be a great weekend to ride. There are some fun events happening this weekend, Lakewoods Weenie Roast is always fun time with the largest weenie roast and drag races, a great destination to ride on Saturday.
Moving into March, to still having great snow and trails is “icing on the cake” for the season. As you may or may not know, Sawyer County snow trails never “technically” close so there is no projected stop date. Our groomers will continue to run as much as they can, provided weather allows, and it’s safe to run on lakes and wetlands. To check out the groomed trails and stay up to date please look at the GTS app.
Many of the business in the county are open year-round however there are some that have seasonal hours and some will close after this weekend or further into the month. Others may adjust their hours as the season slows down. As you move through March and plan rides, please consider the places you want to stop and make sure to check out their hours.
As always, ride safe and enjoy the upcoming weekend!

Groomers set out last night for a light run of the main trails that generally see more traffic. No reports of problems while they groomed.
Sun was out again yesterday doing its damage. Road routes can be bare, some have a light snow covering on them. Early morning riding will be great, but as the sun comes up and thaws the snow, the trails will change quickly to soft or even burn thru to ground base. Please ride causiously as corners too will softnen up and may reveal an ice base underneath.
We plan to keep grooming when possible. Evening temputures can dictate when we can or can’t groom. We have hit our cap for State funding this year, so for the rest of this season, the grooming costs are on the club.
Enjoy early March riding for as long as it lasts.

Trails Good on average
March riding can be the best but you have to ride it when we have the SNOW. That was true yesterday. If you rode you found Good to Very Good riding everywhere in the woods. Along the roads & crossing by the afternoon it was soft & even wet. That’s late season riding.
Temps are still on a roller coaster. Warm in the 30’s during the day & low teens to 10’s at night. Next SNOW forecast Sunday night into Monday. Looks to be 2 inches. Stay tuned.
Yesterday rode from our home on Trail 10, east of Eagle River. This is the one way on the north side of the Hwy 70 to town. Left at a little past noon. High sun & there were burn throughs on 10 mainly under the big pines. Taylor Lk Rd was SNOW covered as was Pine Ln all the way to the Bloom Rd crossing & all of 10 after crossing Bloom to the Loon Lk Rd crossing. Trails GOOD. Took Alt 13S toward Three Lakes VERY GOOD. Just as you get near Three Lakes right onto Alt13W toward the cranberry marshes & Sugar Camp. SNOW covered & GOOD to VERY GOOD. Entered Sugar Camp on 13. ALL of 13 was SNOW covered & VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT. 13 connects to the Eagle River along Hwy 17 heading north. 13 was VERY GOOD all the way to the Hwy 70W crossing to the north side of Hwy 70. 13 was GOOD all the way into town except road crossing. In town back onto Alt13S “the grade” to 10E intersection on Willow Rd. 10E home on the south side of Hwy 70. Deep SNOW & GOOD to VERY GOOD. Great 42 mile ride.
Groomers headed out about 5:30pm last night & groomed nearly the entire system. Here is what was NOT groomed:
Trail 70W/13S/7 – this trail is located right behind Super 8
Uncle Kent club trail – this trail is located off 10W & ends at Hwy G
Please remember:
When you come upon a group of sleds in front of you on the trail. Passing them can get you in trouble. Have been seeing this all winter. When an entire group passes, by the time the last sled passes, a sled could be coming from the other direction.
Remember as you ride & meet a groomer the equipment is NOT able to leave the trail due to it’s weight. Pull over & stop. Wait for direction from the driver. Give ’em a thumbs up. They groom so we can ride!
THINK COLD!!! Keep DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE!!
Ride it when we got it! See ya on the trails!

Snowmobile Information:
Yesterdays high was 29, but bright sun. Today it looks like partial sun and 34. Our lake still have plenty of snow, but caution is advised due to drifts from the other day. Parts of trails in the woods area good, but open areas have burn through spots. Trail boss George, and groomer Ken worked 17, F, and 5 yesterday. Caution areas are 17 from Woodruff to East Boundary, then Raven Lake area with all the tight corners ( although good overall, some ice in corners), then out in the open by Powell Marsh bridge. Trail 1, Stearns Lake Road, is showing a lot of asphalt from sun, but there is still snow on the edges, and the banks are soft enough to pull snow down. Weather and radar shows 36 today, 37 tomorrow, 41 Sunday with chances of snow starting Sunday, then a cool down to teens at night, and 20’s during the day. Right now the trails have one foot on ice, and the other foot on a banana peel. Tons of trailers coming up last night. Casino lot is full, and so is the Great Northern in Mercer, so trails will be busy today. Ride on the right, slow down in the corners, don’t blow by slower riders, and give groomers a wide berth. That’s all I have to say about that, Forrest. Mark

Both groomers were out Wednesday night. I groomed the entire east side of town, and it was awesome. Cut out the moguls and pulled corners in to leave a nice ribbon of trail behind me. Cold temps last night should have froze it up nicely. But that evil sun is out this morning, so conditions can change quickly. Hopefully there is enough snow to last thru the weekend. Most areas have a nice hard ice base. But some that get the full sun hitting them don’t have that and may burn out quickly.

Washburn County snowmobile trails still remain open at this time. Area Clubs & County Staff are reporting fair conditions after the weekend. The rainy weather received through most of the day on Monday has covered most of the trails in ice. There is snow in the forecast for Wednesday, and we hope that will help with the overall conditions of the trails.

Date of Report: March 2, 2023
Area Report:
The snow has arrived again. With 2-3” of fresh snow, our trails will be in good shape. USE CAUTION there is a lot of ice under this new snow. Corners wi-ll be very icy. Stay on your side of the trail. We will be out grooming, day and night, so please give them the room they need.
I also need to add, we are at the edge of what I would consider “late season riding”. The elevated temperatures in the forecast with sunny days, will have significant impacts on trail conditions this time of the year. Exposed areas will become snirty and overall thin snow cover. Conditions will change rapidily, and we will try to update as soon as possible.
Barrels have been removed from Boom Lake, so travel is on your own risk. All other lakes are still marked.
There is a solid ice base under the snow. We can’t stress enough to ride defensively out there.
Thank you
