Trail conditions are in Good to Very Good but are very icy.  The base is hard ice covered with hard frozen snow with loose snow on top. About 1/2 inch yesterday. This is making for VERY slippery conditions.  These conditions can get you in trouble quickly so please SLOW DOWN & RIDE RIGHT to be safe.

Deep freeze temps have ended.  20’s during the day until Monday when temps will pop up in the 30’s ’til Friday. Teens to low 20’s at night.  SNOW Monday night into Tuesday morning. No firm totals.

Last night all trails except Trail Alt 13S to Three Lakes were groomed.

REMINDER – Trail 10E has a one-way section that starts at Taylor Lake Rd.  When riding & head east past the ERRA Sports Arena you ride on the south side of Hwy 70E.  This goes all the way to the gas station.  When riding & heading west from the gas station you ride on the north side of Hwy 70E.  All road crossings have signs that say DO NOT ENTER – if you are going the wrong way.  Please be aware & do not go the wrong way on these trails.

Eagle & Catfish Lake trails are marked.  Please stay by the orange reflective barrels. No change in condition. Surface is very hard.  Found it slippery in spots. Remember not all lakes are safe.

NOTE: Off of Trail 70W after entering St. Germain is a trail locals call “The Goat” trail.  It is a Club Trail that starts at TIN 287 to TIN 288 that is CLOSED.  It is clearly marked as CLOSED with fencing & signs.  Please do not ride through this area from either direction. DO NOT RIDE ON HWY 70 as this is not legal.

Snowmobile Information:

Hornshoe area has had a “fair” rating this week – not by choice.Three different issues in five days kept us off our normal grooming standard. I don’t have a lot of details since Keith was in the tractor, and I was on my sled, and we are both deaf in one ear and can’t hear out of the other, but we should be back up tonight and on “good” for the weekend. A BIG Thank You to Mercer Snow goers for for finishing up the northern part of trail 17 today after last nights malfunction.Lakes are pretty good except FENCE. We will not mark Fence this year. The other lakes have humps, but the wind has patched the ice spots. Watch for slush once the arctic blast ends. Wow, a lot of big groups out yesterday and today. Everyone we met was riding right, and had their groups together. No snow the last couple of days, so this weekend and warm next week may put the kibosh on kawabunga. Have fun and be safe. Mark

Date of Report: February 3, 2023

Area Report:

There has been a recent dusting of snow across the county. Area Clubs & County Staff are continuing to maintain a close eye on trails and their conditions. All of the clubs are reporting the trails to be in great condition for riding. Cooler temps & more snow is in the forecast so the trail base should harden back up and create great riding for the remainder of the season. Please remember to ride with caution and stay on designated trail surfaces. Clubs are out grooming and maintaining the trails on a regular basis so please use caution when you encounter grooming equipment.

The trails are in good condition.  There are however some very icy corners so take it easy and expect every corner to be icy. We have had an increase in bad accidents this year. We want everyone to be safe and make it home so lower the speed a bit and live to ride another day. Be safe and have fun.

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: 10-16”

Date of Report: February 3, 2023

Area Report:

With the colder temps last night, there was no grooming of the Conover trails. Reports from sledders was that the trails were flat and fine.

Yesterday brought 2 more snowmobile fatalities to Vilas County. That is a total of 5 for Vilas, and a state total of 11 since the season started in late December. PLEASE SLOW DOWN! With the colder temps, the snow is hard and icy. The accidents are collisions with another objects, trees, other sleds, and cars. Speed is the leading cause of these accidents. We want everyone to have a safe and fun time riding, and to come back again. Please ride right, ride safe.

News and Reports:

If you find a condition that you need to report to the Conover Sno-Buddies like a down tree, water on the trail, etc, either message us on Facebook, use the contact page on our website, or even notify a local establishment. They know how to get a hold of us to fix the issue.

  • A reminder to ride between the orange blazers. Along Hwy K West, there were several 100 trees removed this summer to place new electric poles. Most of the stumps are still there. If you were to hit one, it could ruin your trip quickly. Ride Right ➡️ Ride Safe.
