Trail Report: Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin – December 22, 2016

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 8-12

Date of Report: December 22, 2016

Area Report:

Posted by Club President – Barry Hopkins
I put on about 90 miles today through MW, Mercer and Hurley trail systems. A bit more snow north but we are all staying out of swamps until we get more cold. So use caution in those areas that haven’t been groomed.  I am very happy with this being the earliest start we have had in 3 years. It is looking like a little warm up through the weekend then back to more seasonal temps Tuesday. Bake some cookies and put them out for Santa and maybe he will bring us more snow soon! (or bring them to us 😉   Our trails are in fair to good condition.   Merry Christmas!

Trail Report: Land O’ Lakes, Wisconsin – December 23, 2016

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 8-10 inches

Date of Report: December 23, 2016

Area Report:

Most of the local clubs have sent out the groomers at least once since it has warmed up. All the trails we rode yesterday were much flatter (but not as white) as they were before. We need to get some snow and not rain and it will be a good holiday week. If we get warm and rain it will be another marginal holiday.

News and Reports:

Most lakes are froze–if they are marked stay near the barrels—if not marked I would recommend that you avoid them. The swamps are mostly froze so we are ready.  The base is good. Just need some white gold to come down in the next few days to put on top.

Snowmobile Information:

The Land O Lakes Cross Country ski trails and  Ice skating rinks are open and ready for use.

Merry Christmas

Trail Report: Conover, Wisconsin – December 22, 2016

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 8″-9″ in the woods

Date of Report: December 22, 2016

Area Report:

We received about 2″ of wet snow yesterday & groomers were out last night. Trails today are still conservatively rated fair with some good areas mixed in. There is a chance of light snow tomorrow then Sunday/Monday looks questionable. Let’s hope we stay on the cold side of the question. At intersection #718 (45 & 8E/8W), the center fork is 8E but somehow is labeled 8W. The brown signs are correct. I’ll try to get this sign corrected soon.

Twin Haven via the new trail; Trail is nice except for the last 3/4 mile where it turns off the grade. This section must be ridden slowly. For those running along the power lines N from North Twin boat ramp, you now have a stop sign at the grade, E/W traffic has the right of way.

Lakes are not marked yet, stay off until they are marked.

News and Reports:

Don’t forget you need a WI trail permit to ride the state’s groomed trail system. Aggressive riding causes more trail damage than slower, less aggressive riding. Until the base gets built up & we get more snow to work with, groomers can only do so much to repair damage.

Trail Report: Bayfield County, Wisconsin – December 22, 2016

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: Varies by area

Date of Report: December 22, 2016

Area Report:

Trail conditions are variable and our trails are not yet being groomed. Water crossings are not safe and swamps still need to freeze down. There is snow in the forecast for tomorrow and on Christmas Day, so stay tuned!

If you’re looking for a place to ride, the Tri-County Corridor is always open. Forest roads can also be an option.

Please report any downed trees or other unsafe conditions to the Forestry Department at 715-373-6114.

Also, download the Avenza app (free) and get the updated 2017-18 Bayfield County Snowmobile Map on your device before you hit the trails – it will allow you to locate yourself on the trail map with GPS so you can see where you are (no cell reception required)!

Trail Report: Rhinelander, Wisconsin – December 22, 2016

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 8-10 fluffy snow

Date of Report: December 22, 2016

Area Report:

The trails are open and are in “Early Season” riding conditions.  All of our trails have been packed, and we are working on grooming where we can.  We have many swamps within our trail system and must take a conservative approach with getting the groomers with drags out.  Please have patience, our trails are rideable, but they are not by any stretch in mid-season form.  We can not afford to get a groomer/tractor stuck at this point in the season.  We will have all the areas we can, panned by Saturday.  There will still be a few swampy areas that the groomers may have to wait one more week to get through.  All of the trails have been packed with sleds at this point.

Please do all of us a favor and stay on the trails.

Trail Report: Presque Isle, Wisconsin – December 22, 2016

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 10-13″

Date of Report: December 22, 2016

Area Report:

Welcome back to another “Snowmobile Season”!!  We are expecting fresh snow almost daily for the next week, and we need it after a warm-up today.

Trails are “FAIR”… we continue to need cold, hard freezes for swamps and lakes to freeze up. We still have wet sections of our trail system that we will bypass during grooming until they are frozen enough to hold the weight of the groomer. Trails are still in early season condition and the wet areas should be expected, and rode with caution. We’ll update frequently as we hope with some fresh snow that the trails will bounce back nicely and in time for the post-Christmas riders.

Please consider joining and supporting our Sno-Bunnies Snowmobile Club at http://sno-bunnies.com. In joining, you can then get your WI Trail pass for just $10.

Trail Report: Ely, Minnesota – December 22, 2016

Ely, MN Chamber of Commerce

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: 10-15 inches

Date of Report: December 22, 2016

Area Report:

Ely Area Lakes & Trails: There is snow in the woods.  With the recent cold weather, the swamps and wetlands now have 4-6” of ice.  Over 15” of ice is needed before grooming is possible over these areas.  Trail crews are working to clear the Taconite and Arrowhead trails of debris and trees from the November 18 storm.  They are also packing trails so the swamps and wetlands will freeze sooner.  Trail use is not recommended, please use extreme caution and travel at your own risk.  Area lakes do have ice cover.  Medium to large lakes may not have sufficient ice for foot travel yet.  Use caution when traveling out onto lakes – check ice conditions as you move across the ice.  Use recommended safety gear for protection when skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling or ice fishing on area lakes.

Babbitt Trails: No report

Taconite Trail: Snow – 10-15” depth  Base – 0”  Groomed – no  Condition – poor

Tomahawk Trail & Local Trails: Trail not groomed but open from Ely to the Kawishiwi River bridge – this portion of trail has been cut open and will be rough.  Remaining sections of trails still need to be opened up from wind storm.  Wetlands and swamps have not frozen solid along sections of the trail.  Ice conditions may not yet be safe for traveling by snowmobile.  Check ice conditions before venturing out.
