Trail Report: Rhinelander, Wisconsin – February 1, 2017

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 6-10″ in the woods

Date of Report: February 1, 2017

Area Report:

We received 3-5″ of fresh snow on Monday.  It was a pretty light snow, so it didn’t do much to increase the trail base. At the very least, it freshened up the trails and covered some of the bare spots in the exposed areas of the trails.  I rode a section of our trail system last night, and I still have them in good condition.  The trail base is hard and mostly flat.  There are some stutter bumps, that won’t be completely filled in without some good wet snow.  The snowmobile routes on roadways are kinda thin, but are not 100% pavement.

The lakes that were crossed last night, showed the slush as being completely frozen.  As a result, they are good and hard, but have varying amounts of hard ruts due to the frozen slush.

We are back on regular grooming, and the trails should be good for the weekend.

One thing to be aware of, is some wet areas are popping up in the swamps.  The January thaw resulted in the loss of the frost in some of the wetter areas.  We have been working on these spots to allow them to freeze up, but some still exist.  They aren’t deal breakers, but do require some focus on getting through them quickly and safely.  There is one wet spot on trail 13 North – east of Rhinelander (just south of Hwy C.).  There is one on trail 17 (near the Al Gen Supper club).  There are a few small ones just north of Pine Harbor bar.

Trail Report: Eagle River, Wisconsin – February 1, 2017

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: Hard base in most areas – Plenty Snow cover

Trails Good Condition

Over the last few days cold temps & SNOW have returned to Eagle River! Since Sunday through yesterday afternoon it looks to me that Eagle River got about 3-4 inches of new SNOW.  West side of town looks to have gotten a little more. We are at the high for today of 18.  Tonight 0.  Trails will stay in Good Condition with little sun & cold temperatures.  SNOW forecast for Saturday.

Trail Boss reports all trails groomed last night. ALL TRAILS ARE OPEN. Gates & fencing are down & the WI River Bridge section of Trail 10W/13N is OPEN.

The hard base is icy & new SNOW can make things “squirrelly” for the backend of your sled.  So be careful.  Grooming last night should have helped that.  Otherwise Time To Ride!

Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail are OPEN & safe by the orange reflective barrels.  No surface slush.

Time to THINK COLD!  And Doin’ The Snow Dance!

Groomer Show in St. Germain on Wednesday, February 1. You can ride your sled there.

See Ya On The Trails!

Trail Report: Oconto County, Wisconsin – February 1, 2017

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 5-9

Date of Report: February 1, 2017

Area Report:

Townsend – Red Arrow Snowmobile – ATV Club – We received 2″-3″ of fresh snow since yesterday and the groomers will be out later today. It’s cold out again and the trails should hold up well. Just remember that under that fresh snow is some ice, so be careful. Paul Bunyan has closed the stretch of trail behind Backwoods Bar because of water. They broke through with their groomer last Friday. So to get through to Burnt Dam Rd. you have to ride around the corner on Sawyer Lake Rd. and jump back on the trail. The Red Arrow system is in GOOD TO VERY GOOD riding condition.

Lakewood – Paul Bunyan Snowmobile Club – The Lakewood area got about 2 inches of fluffy snow with a little more coming down. Later today the groomers will be out getting the trails back in shape. Remember there is a lot of ice under the fresh powder.

Bagley and Brazeau – Joyriders Trails -Trails are back open on Feb 1st at 7am.  They are in good condition but there is a problem on the Butler Springs trail.  Logging has been taking place on Butler Springs Rd and will continue for  the next few weeks.  The loggers removed most of the snow on the trail.   Since it has snowed the groomer drivers have been out on this trail trying to re-groom it.  We don’t know if the loggers will come back and take off the new snow that has recently fallen.  If you are familiar with the ATV trail that runs next to the snowmobile trail, through Butler Springs, you, can use this trail.  If we continue to have a problem with keeping it groomed, we plan to start grooming the ATV trail.  Also we have problems grooming  in other areas with thin ice.  On the Pipeline and a few other areas the ice is to thin for the groomer to groom but safe for snowmobiles to ride.

Gillett Sno ATV Riders – Trails are open and in poor to fair condition.

Chute Pond Snowmobile Club – Chute Pond trails are open, and grooming on a regular basis. Our trails are thin, with a very icy base- which with even light traffic gets exposed in and around the corners.

The Nicolet State Trail (railroad grade) is in poor condition south of Breed, and in fair to good condition north of Breed. Wooded trails west of Hwy 32 are in groomed and in fair to mostly good condition- wooded trails east of Hwy 32 are still a work in progress. Groomers are trying to improve their condition- but for now they’re in poor to fair condition, with some areas better than fair.

Please be aware that the groomers may be out day and night as needed to get the trails back into shape. Please watch out for the groomers, and give them space when you see them.

Expect some rough and bare spots, some standing water and slushy spots, and probable icy areas, especially near the corners. Please ride with caution- and stay on the marked trails.

Oconto Falls – Sno Jokers Trails –  Trails are CLOSED.

Lena Snow Drifters – Trails are CLOSED.
Chase Sno-Chasers – Trails are CLOSED.
