Trail Report: Neillsville, Wisconsin – February 7, 2017

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: 1-2″ Base

Date of Report: February 7, 2017

Area Report:

Most of the Clark County Snowmobile Trails are currently OPEN. Thorp trail from intersection 36 to 78, Spencer trail that runs north and east from Corridor 25 to Marathon County and Greenwood to Curtis trail from intersection 76 to 45 remain closed.  Trails are currently rated in Poor to Fair condition and caution must be used in certain areas.  Please be advised that riding on closed trails is trespassing and fines apply.

Snowmobile Information:

Our club has been active for 29 years now.  We started out as a small club in 1988 named The Neillsville Rec Riders, designing ATV routes that accessed the Clark County Forest Trail System, via roads.  We then created our first cross county ungroomed snowmobile and winter ATV trail system from Neillsville to Granton.  In 1993 we purchased a used Bombardier groomer to start grooming our trail for snowmobiling.  In 1996 we expanded our snowmobile and winter ATV trail system from Neillsville to the Clark County Forest Trail near Hatfield.

In 1997 we added a tractor and new drag to our grooming fleet to keep up with the grooming schedule.  In 1999 we further expanded our growing trail system with a snowmobile trail running from Granton to Sherwood.  In 2001 we made a big achievment in trail devolpment by creating a snowmobile trail from Neillsville to Loyal, giving us a total of 56 miles in groomed snowmobile trails across private lands.   In 2002 we had to add a second tractor and drag to keep up with the high grooming demand.  After receiving heavy, drifting snows during the ’06-’08 seasons while continuing to get stuck with our tractors, we felt the need to add a newer tracked groomer to our fleet.

We purchased a Piston Bully trailer groomer to keep up with the demanding trail grooming where our tractors fell short, in deep snow and eliminated 1 tractor and drag!  We groom our trails 20′ wide where ever possible and they are the best marked in the county, you won’t get lost on our trail system!   In 2010, we had to cease the operation of winter ATV use on all of our snowmobile trails, due to increasing abuse from disrespectful ATV’ers creating problems on private lands. Moving forward in 2011 we strive to keep up with the best snowmobile trails in the county and that is out main focus moving on.

The Clark County Forest ATV and Snowmobile Trails are maintained by the Parks and Forest Department as well as the 9 other clubs that maintain the rest of the trails in Clark County.  Our club would not be where it is today without the help and permission of the 89 landowners who allow us to cross their lands.  With out them we would have no trails.  All of our members that help out, donate their time and it is much appricated when we get compliments on how well of a job we have done.

Trail Report: Conover, Wisconsin – February 7, 2017

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 10″ – 12″ in indisturbed areas

Date of Report: February 7, 2017

Area Report:

Both groomers were out again last night. Temps only fell to 20 last night so trails probably didn’t firm up rock hard. Saturday’s clipper turned into another non-event storm (is a clipper really ever a storm?). Today’s “Colorado Low” system must need Mapquest because it’s been all over the map but as of now we are forecast back into the snow band & it started snowing at 7 AM. We need fresh snow to work with. That is the bottom line, I’m not going to sugar coat the message. I groomed the west side, so I can speak accurately about that & can assume about the east. If the snow actually continues after I type, everything can be upgraded.

Road crossings on Hwy 45 are poor. Crossings on K near town also poor.

Trail 8: From the Energy Mart west to trail 45 south intersection is fair at best. Snow is brown, ugly brown with lots of ice. Beyond this intersection west until 13 south intersection is better but snow is thin over an ice base that has some bumps frozen in. From this point west to Star Lake road, trail is good or better but some ice in corners. Road is bare at Burnt Bridge.

Trails 45 south and 13 south loop is good or better.

Trail 13 north/45 north of Hwy K: Trail is smooth but thin with ice in corners. Last week I reported an area about 2 miles north but south of the bridge that was brown. That area is back and worse. Sunday night I tried to drag snow onto the trail from some wide corners. There just isn’t enough to work with. Expect snirt with the emphasis on dirt. Beyond the bridge, both trails are good or better all the way.

East side trails should be good or better EXCEPT we are not grooming behind the cemetery on the way to Pioneer Lake and the short link from Muskrat Rd to the Cemetery Rd is bare ice. Hwy K at Pioneer Creek crossing is bare & I assume the road route to South Twin is also.

Twin Haven via the new trail; It has smoothened out nicely now. For those running along the power lines heading north from the North Twin boat ramp, you now have a stop sign at the grade, E/W traffic has the right of way.

The lakes are marked and had lots of snow. They are frozen again, but watch for the possibility of ruts on the lakes. More snow is needed to smoothen out the lakes.

News and Reports:

It crossed my mind that for those of you that have never snowmobiled in Vilas or surrounding, it is unlike areas further south. We really have nearly zero farm field crossings. Most riding is in the woods, some trails are on old rail grades & there are lots of lake crossings. But, be prepared to travel a distance to the next stop, especially along the northern portions of the county. Food is hard to find on Tuesdays, carry a snack.

Please stay on the trails; Trespassing is the fastest way to loose trails. Don’t forget you need a WI trail permit to ride the state’s groomed trail system. Aggressive riding causes more trail damage than slower, less aggressive riding. Ride right & be safe.

Snowmobile Information:

Conover Blizzard Blast is February 18th at the Conover Town Park on Hwy K east.

Trail Report: Eagle River, Wisconsin – February 7, 2017

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: Hard base snow covered

Date of Report: February 7, 2017

Trails In Good Condition

SNOW is moving in today into tonight.  Somewhere in the 3-5 inch total is the forecast.  High in the mid 20’s today with 7 tonight.  Then temps dropping down for the next 2 days.  10 during the day & below zero at night.

The new Trail Boss report for today was minimal grooming overnight.  Repair work starting at the Dairy Queen.  Heading west to the Honey Bear.  Heading south to Bloom Road.  Grooming again tonight.

Some sun yesterday did soften up some areas & cause some snirt to appear mostly at road crossings & in some sharp corners.

Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail are OPEN & safe by the orange reflective barrels.  No surface slush.

Short report this morning.  Quiet on the trails with low traffic.

Trail Report: Boulder Junction, Wisconsin – February 6, 2017

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 10-12 inches

Date of Report: February 6, 2017

Area Report:

Trail report for February 6 2017 -Trails are in good to very good condition. Please be advised, there were quite a few sleds on the trail the last few days and with all the traffic the trail doesn’t stay flat for very long. We have had our complete trail system groomed every day over the weekend and will continue to groom this week. We are expecting a snow storm system to come in Monday night with 2” to 4” of snow expected. This will really help because our corners and around town are very bare and icy. The logging areas have very little snow so use caution. We need snow and cold weather!!! Please be careful out there! Remember be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.
