Trail Report: Boulder Junction, Wisconsin – February 13, 2017

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 8-10

Date of Report: February 13, 2017

Area Report:

Trail report for February 13 2017-Trails are fair to good. With the warmer weather and the increased traffic over the weekend our trails have degraded somewhat. I took a ride with the wife to Manitowish Waters yesterday and the trails were pretty good. The corners are icy and bare and as you get closer to town it can get bumpy. The logging areas have very little snow and sun is getting stronger this time of year so the trails with the southern exposure can start to degrade quickly.  There is no snow expected in the immediate future so we will do what we can with the trails. We can always use more snow and cold weather!!!  Please be careful out there! Remember be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

Trails In Good Condition
Icy

Warm up in progress.  The picture on the left was taken at noon yesterday.  Trail 10E about 6 miles east of Eagle River Hwy 70E on the north side of the road.  Trail ice base is holding at this point & most areas are snow covered.  There is blow out in many corners. So it is icy out there even the straight aways.  Please slow down.

Trail Boss Brian reports that Trails 70W, 10W, 10E, Alt 13S, 13S, 17S, 7N, 3(Manske Swamp section going west) and10W/13N(WI River Bridge area) groomed last night.

The area of 10W/13N is safe but very icy & slippery especially on the west side.  Slow down through there.

Both Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail are safe by the orange reflective barrels. No surface slush. Check it out & let you know later today. But remember only safe by the barrels.

Did notice snow seems a little thinner & trails more icy going west & south.  With the exception of 10W & Alt 13S. Everything has hard base just thinner snow cover.

Reminder that from dusk to dawn the speed limit is 55MPH.

Area Report:

Another  awesome weekend of riding in the Northwoods is in the books. Groomers worked overtime to try to keep up with the heavy traffic and 30 degree temps. Joe and I rode to Boulder Junction this afternoon and you could tell the trails had been ridden hard this weekend but were in pretty good shape. Tonite or tomorrow the groomers will be out and possibly some snow and colder temps for Tuesday thru Thursday. A warm up is forecast for the weekend—hope that forecast changes

Trail Report: Conover, Wisconsin – February 12, 2017

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 13″ – 15″ in undisturbed areas

Date of Report: February 12, 2017

Area Report:

Friday’s traffic was high and Saturday’s traffic was off the charts. Trails took a beating Saturday in particular. The warm weather forecast for the weekend has stayed just below freezing with overcast, so the snow has survived. Temps may sneak above freezing today and Monday, hopefully not too far than drop back to mid 20s Tuesday.

Both groomers were out again last night. Temps stayed near 30 overnight so trails most likely didn’t firm up well. Trails will start the day smooth but if traffic is high, they will get beat quickly again today.

I’m giving the trails a good rating but expect very good with some excellent thrown in too. (Very good is not an option when posting a report)

Road crossings on Hwy 45 are fair. Crossings on K near town also fair.

We are not grooming behind the cemetery on the way to Pioneer Lake.

Twin Haven via the new trail; It has smoothened out nicely now. For those running along the power lines heading north from the North Twin boat ramp, you now have a stop sign at the grade, E/W traffic has the right of way.

The lakes are marked and pretty smooth now.

News and Reports:

It crossed my mind that for those of you that have never snowmobiled in Vilas or surrounding, it is unlike areas further south. We really have nearly zero farm field crossings. Most riding is in the woods, some trails are on old rail grades & there are lots of lake crossings. But, be prepared to travel a distance to the next stop, especially along the northern portions of the county. Food is hard to find on Tuesdays, carry a snack.

Please stay on the trails; Trespassing is the fastest way to loose trails. Don’t forget you need a WI trail permit to ride the state’s groomed trail system. Aggressive riding causes more trail damage than slower, less aggressive riding. Ride right & be safe.

Trails In Good Condition

Temps popped up starting Friday into the 30’s.  This will continue into Tuesday. Then back to winter. The weather guys reported snow for overnight.  Well there was enough to cover sleds, car & truck with a thin covering.  Bummer.

Here is my hundred mile ride yesterday.

10E east to 11S(Kimbell Crk trl) to Three Lakes. Some chop but plenty of snow.

Then out on 13N(Rice Crk Rd) toward Sugar Camp. Good but really icy in the corners. Took that all the way to Ripco Rd to where it connects to Sno-Eagles trails. Some icy & even a little mush in the swamps. Snow but thin in areas.

13 into town & west on 7N toward St Germain & Sayner. Good shape. Snow covered. Some corner blowout.

10 toward Wi River bridge. Snow a bit grainy but ample. Bridge area was way icy. Be careful.

13 back to town was bumpy at 4:30pm. Soft in town.

10E heading home was thin after turning off 13/grade. Up til near Sports Arena. Plenty of snow after that. Good to very good.

A ton of traffic. Large groups of 6-12+ sleds.

Both Catfish Lake Loop & Eagle Lake Trail are safe by the orange reflective barrels.  No surface slush.  Check it out & let you know later today.  But remember only safe by the barrels.

Reminder that from dusk to dawn the speed limit is 55MPH.

This weekend is the 12th Annual Labatt Blue USA Adult Pond Hockey Championships.  Located off of Hwy 70E/Trail 10E of Eagle River on Dollar Lake Rd.  You can ride by car, truck or snowmobile!

Trail Report: Crivitz, Wisconsin – February 12, 2017

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 6+inches

Date of Report: February 12, 2017

Area Report:

It was another awesome weekend of riding.  Thank you to all who were up here and took advantage of the beautiful trails.  The Fish-O-Rama was another great success.

I talked with the groomers last night.  The easiest way to do this is to break up the trail into sections for you.  The area known as the River Trail was not groomed last night due to a break down.  That section should be considered in fair condition.  The high traffic area along Parkway from County W on the south end up to Boat Landing 9 is mixed riding.  There are a lot of good sections, but then you will run into several section 100’s of yards long where the logging was that are poor.

Now the good news…The trail from Crooked Lake going east to Parkway is good to very good.  Also, the trail going north from Crooked Lake to Silver Cliff is also good to very good.  The trail along Cauldron Falls Flowage is also good to very good…and the trails north of Highway C are good to very good.

Enjoy the trails while we still have them.  I’ll be back to you mid week…
