Temporary Trail Diversion Has Ended in Brimley

Trails are in good shape with no wet areas on trails. Watch for wet spots along the edge of the trails.

Warm temperatures today and Tuesday, but the cold comes back Wednesday and we should be able to groom again.

Check our Facebook page for pictures.

There’s a big reroute around Raco this year.

There is a change in the Soo to Kinross trail, also.

We have a newly plowed parking area at the beginning of trail #8 under the International Bridge, which now has an all-season Porta-John.

If you are staying in the Sault, please look at our list of supporters on our web page and give them your business.  Please do that in all the towns you visit. The grooming entities are all made up of volunteers who want you to support those who support us!

We now have a marked trail that will be groomed on occasion to get to parts and service at Chippewa Motors.  It comes into the back of their lot from the east side of M-129 when you come out of the woods.

Remember, trail base is the amount of snow between your track and the ground below, not the amount of fluff piled up in the woods.  Six inches of snow compresses to less than an inch on the trail.

Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 –

Base 1- 4 inches -Trail is in good condition.

Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 –

Base 1 – 5 inches -Trail is in good condition.  Trail is back to normal where the collapsed building was.

When going across the bridge in Brimley, make sure you go with the flow of traffic!  Blowing and drifting occurs when you first leave Brimley.

Raco to Naomikong Trail #8 [where Paradise meets us], Trail #8 –

Base 2 – 6 inches – Trail is in good condition.

Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49 –

Base 1- 4 inches – Trail is in fair to good condition.  Wet areas may be open again.

We now have a marked and groomed trail going to Chippewa Motors.  It starts once you come out of the woods east of M-129 off #449.  It comes into their parking lot from behind if you need parts or service.

City curfew is from 1 am – 6 am. Remember, most City streets are open to traffic 20mph, stop at all intersections, and ride on the right hand side of the street, not on sidewalks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.

Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 –

Base 1 – 4 inches – Trail is in good condition.  Make sure you follow the reroute once you cross the bridge going south at 7 Mile Road.  Wet areas have been reopened.

When the trail is running along roads, make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.

Kinross loop & south to Pickford, Parts of Trail #49, #472, and #494 –

Base 2 – 4 inches – Trail in good condition.  Watch for trucks on the trail.

Kinross to Raco & Rudyard, Parts of trail #472 & #480 –

Base 2 – 4 inches – Trail in good condition.  Watch for reroute signs just west of Kinross.

The Downtown Trail is signed and coned up Portage Ave.  Big, frozen snow banks, left from the big warmup, are hindering grooming parts of the route, but streets adjacent are open to sleds.

Trail Report: Keweenaw Peninsula / Houghton-Hancock, South Range, Copper Harbor, Michigan – March 7, 2017

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 24″ and up

Date of Report: March 7, 2017

Area Report:

All trails in the Keweenaw to Twin Lakes are open and you can ride.  Trail 17 going thru downtown Hancock is not being groomed because of the low snow, but grooming starts right outside of town.  Trail 3 is not being groomed through Houghton and up heading to South Range because of low snow.  Once you get going towards South Range, grooming starts again.  We got a quick flurry of snow a little while ago that stuck to the ground.  Temps are dropping for the rest of the week and snow is forecasted a bit each day.  You never know tho, with the wind coming across Lake Superior.  That lake effect is hard to forecast!  The temp this morning at 6 am was 50 and now at 11:30 am its 27!  Groomers will be out every day as needed since temps will be plenty low enough. Trails are hard, icy but definitely can ride.  Even just a few inches of snow would make the trails a lot better.  As I type this, a group of 8 sleds just went by!

Trail 122 between Lake Linden and Gay is closed due to logging.  You can take the trail as far as the Dreamland trail, but no farther.  Trail 133 between Gay and Lac Labelle is rough, but open.

Respect others on the trail and private property while out riding, keep that speed down, stay on the marked, groomed trails, and save the drinking for after the riding!!

Happy Trails from the Trail Goddess!

THE STATE FUNDED SNOWMOBILE TRAIL SYSTEM IN VILAS COUNTY WILL
OFFICIALLY CLOSE EFFECTIVE 7:00 A.M. MARCH 7TH, 2017.
Conditions have continued to deteriorate and most trails have become
unrideable. The high winds this morning have likely resulted in trees down
across trails creating safety hazards.
Thank you for a great season!

Vilas County Trails are officially closed as of 7am today – Tuesday March 7th, 20107

From Dale Mayo:

“””Due to rapidly deteriorating trail conditions and high winds this morning, the funded snowmobile trail system

in Vilas County will officially close at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 7 March 2017.”””

The trails could potentially reopen if conditions permit – but – the way it looks right now – this happening is highly unlikely. We have trees down on the system from last nights storm and continuing high winds. Reopening would also take a significant snowfall and then an inspection of each club’s system by that club and then the President of that club would need to sign off that his or her system is safe and ready to go. Trails could be open until March 31st at midnight – conditions permitting.

Still a few days remaining!

Trail Report: Conover, Wisconsin – March 7, 2017

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: very little

Date of Report: March 7, 2017

Area Report:

All Vilas County snowmobile trails are closed effective today. Truthfully, they were not ride able and should have been closed sooner.

After a promising December and early January, we were subject to 2 bad melt downs that turned the 2016-2017 winter into the winter that wasn’t. Best we can hope for is an early spring so we can donate our blood to the ticks & mosquitos. Watch for news and updates here in the fall.

Thanks to all the land owners and volunteers that make our trails possible.
