Trail Report – : Sayner, Wisconsin – February 4, 2018

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 24 inches (+/-) in the woods

Area Report:

The area received around 3 to 4 inches of fresh White Gold since yesterday morning. This was just what the Barnstormer’s Trail Doctors ordered!!! Town trails still suffer badly from extremely heavy traffic but away from town they average good. The heavy traffic had almost everything pretty torn up but we will be out tonight with all three groomers to level things back out again.

Most corners are becoming very icy with traffic as the days go on. Please be cautious and assume you will be meeting someone in every single corner you come to. We always do everything we can to pull snow back into these corners but as the day goes on they get blown back out again.

Please continue to be cautious on the lakes. The weight of more snow can force the ice down which pushes water up through cracks to form a slush pocket. The slush pockets can come and go. Ice heaves can also form without warning, as ice expends, and pop up in an area that was smooth the day before.

News and Reports:

There are logging operations in the following locations: Trail 9 between Hwy 70 (TIN 364) and Ross Lake Rd (TIN 225). There is also logging in the Jean Lake Rd area of Trail 7 North, between TINS 227 & 800. The logging, in this area, should be in the woods away from the trail.

(TIN = Trail Intersection Numbers)

Please watch out for these logging areas. Slow down and stay out of the way of the loggers. DO NOT hassle the loggers. They have the right to close down sections of any trail they are logging near or using. If they get hassled too much, that is exactly what they will do – shut that trail down. The logging operations can run at anytime of the day or night. Loggers use some of the trails to drive in and out. So please be watchful in logging areas for trucks on the trail. Logging operations in any of these areas can start and/or stop without warning. So even if you ride in an area and there was nothing going on one day – it can start back up the next day.

TRAILS FAIR TO GOOD

Wow! SNOW began to fall Friday evening and continued most of yesterday. About 5-6 inches of new SNOW out there. Was out riding over the last several days found plenty of SNOW on trails & found trail areas that were thin & grainy. Everywhere there is a hard icy base. Areas where there are SNOW blow outs in the corners too. In town there is SNOW cover but with the heavy traffic a lot of snirt. Moving out of town trails improve immediately. Seemed that areas with heavy tree cover where the SNOW doesn’t get down onto the trail were thin. And areas that were open the sun a few days back were thinner & grainy. Rating them FAIR to GOOD.

Grooming continued last night and the tracking systems shows NEARLY All Trails with the exception of Trail Grampa Grahm/Trail 1 off of 10E & the road spur trail to Lumpy’s on Bloom Rd to Spruce Rd were not groomed. Not sure but also does not look like the Trig’s Spur was not groomed. Should be good riding today.

2 below zero at 7:30am with a high of 6 today. Back below zero again tonight. Teens & single digits during the day and below zero every night forecast through all of this coming week. Time to Ride!

The sled traffic over the last few days has been very high. Many large groups. Lots of families. Noticed many rental sleds out on the trail too. Enjoying a first taste of riding in Eagle River, THE SNOWMOBILE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD® Not many places you can go where you can park your tow vehicle. Hop on your sled going everywhere you want without having to use that tow vehicle for your entire stay!

Here are a few continuing reminders on the trails:

Trail 1N logging operation continues in the section between the Town of Washington Town Hall & Eagle Lake. Right now there are logs in piles along sections of the trail. With the log piles and icy grainy conditions in that section it would be good to slow down. Very icy corners.

CATFISH LAKE LOOP & EAGLE LAKE TRAILS ARE NOW BOTH MARKED AND OFFICIALLY OPEN. PLEASE STAY BY THE ORANGE REFLECTIVE BARRELS TO BE SAFE. REMINDER THE CATFISH LAKE LOOP TO LUMPY’S IS NO LONGER A TRAIL.

Yes the Ice Castle is still up! If you are riding zip on over to the “grade” to check out the 2018 Eagle River Area Fire Department ICE CASTLE!!!! Located adjacent to the downtown “grade” trail by the Historic Railroad Grade. The lights installed change colors. Ice benches as part of the Castle let you take photos of your group. Check out this link Eagle River Ice Castle to check out a video of the Ice Castle building. Warm did do damage to the turrets of the Castle. Good the cold is back.

Got back from a 3 days sledding trip with 9 other Sno-Eagles riders on Friday. Rode many Vilas County Trails riding west & north on our way up the UP to White Pine, Michigan. Side trip to Lake of the Clouds. Thursday it snowed like crazy up there. Headed back home coming down more east & south to Watersmeet. Riding 3 toward town. Then our group separated. Some taking 10W/13N. Others rode with us to 3N & 17N intersection. 2 more dropped off there. 5 of us headed east on 17N to 1 to Eagle Lake Trail. 2 of the group dropped off mid lake to head to their house. Met lots of riders on Eagle Lake. The last 3 of us picked up 10E near 70E Road House and headed home. Over 300 miles and had a great time! Yesterday my ride was a short one of about 70-80 miles. Husband Tom & friends rode about 120 miles. We all found riding great!

Here are your current conditions:

It was a busy but beautiful day on Saturday with lots of traffic, but also 5-6″ of fresh fluffy snow. Our groomers were out in full force packing and grooming everything to make the trails In excellent shape. Now is the time to ride. Take those extra days of vacation and use them for a nice mid week ride. You may find a icy corner or two, so use caution.

Lakes are all marked, please stay close to barrels.

All of the Washburn County snowmobile trails are OPEN! Trails are in fair to good condition with a 5-10 inch base, but could be less in some areas. The snow is currently falling with an estimated 3 to 6 inches to fall, we have already received about 2 inches of fresh powder. Always use caution on the trails as you may encounter active trail grooming equipment. Think snow and enjoy the trails!

TRAILS FAIR ON AVERAGE

First, sorry for no reports over the last couple of days. Was up riding in the UP and had really poor internet & it prevented me from doing an update.

Much warmer start to this Saturday! 3 degrees at 7am and light SNOW falling east of Eagle River. So far about an inch on the ground. Should SNOW off & on throughout the day & into this evening. In between the SNOW forecast is for overcast. 4 below tonight overnight.

Trail Boss reports Trails 70W, 13S, 10W, 7S, 13N, 3S, 17S, 7N aka Paintball Field to Kathan Inn area, 3N aks Manske Swamp & 10W/13N aka Wisconsin River Bridge. Plus trails in town.

Going to busy out there is weekend. Lots of traffic already yesterday afternoon & last night. Be safe & stay on right side of the trails always, slow down when you meet large groups.

Under the new SNOW it is hard base that is icy everywhere so be aware and slow down.

Hello Riders!!

What another great weekend ahead! After a bit of a warm up last Friday then the temps dropping Saturday and staying cold throughout the week our trails set up very nicely!! Reports coming in from around the county are very pleasing! The trails to the north in the Seeley Hills and Moose Lake area are groomed and in GOOD condition! Some icy spots but over all good reports! Trails in the center area of the county such as LCO, Grindstone and the Flowage are also all groomed and GOOD condition! Trails in the southern part of the county such as Birchwood, Winter and Loretta area are also groomed and in GREAT condition as they received a few more inches of snow then the rest of the county in that snow storm that came early last week. The Flambeau Forest and the Tuscobia are GREAT!

We received a bit of snow yesterday and there is a bit more in the forecast on Saturday, not a huge accumulation but we love to see any fresh snow! That will help a bit with the icy spots. The forecast also continues to be cold temps in the single digits which will keep trails hard and smooth.

**Surrounding counties: Price is reported to be in excellent condition. Ashland, Bayfield and Rusk reported as good, Douglas, Washburn and Barron reported to be in fair condition.

A note of caution in one area on the Tuscobia approximately 1000′ east of Wooddale Rd. There is excessive signage indicating an area that was repaired this fall due to a summer washout. The area was repaired but has settled making a low spot dip. Please ride with caution in this area.

Temps for today – Sunday our temps will be in the single digits and below zero at night. Our trails overall are good with some thin spots and some icy corners. Please stay on your side of the trail.

PLEASE STAY ON TRAILS. WE HAVE BEEN GETTING COMPLAINTS THAT SOME HAVE NOT BEEN STAYING ON TRAILS, RIDING ON UNMARKED TRAILS CAN LOSE EASEMENT FOR OUR TRAIL SYSTEM SO PLEASE STAY ON TRAILS!!!!!!

THE GOGEBIC RANGE TRAIL AUTHORITY REPORTS:
01/31/2018
One of our groomers is down for repairs. We don’t know what the timeline is for getting it repaired. Be patient we now have only one groomer to work with, we will get to all the trails when we can.
Overall conditions are good to very good.
Please stay on your side of the trails, we want everyone to be safe.

Trail 2 from Hurley to Ramsay US-2 Crossing is good to very good. This was last groomed on the morning of the 31st… You will still encounter some thin spots along with icy corners. Use caution when riding.
The rail-bed trail ENDS on the east side of the Keystone Bridge. The club grooms the bridge to maintain it for local access. The “old” trail to Wakefield is closed east of Verona Road. Tickets will be issued if you ride on this closed trail.

Trail 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield is fair. The decent from Indianhead Mountain to Wakefield as you travel eastbound on trail 2 needs more snow. The trail by Sunday Lake in Wakefield is thin and has icy corners.

Trail 2 from Wakefield to Marenisco is good to very good. Watch for icy corners from Wakefield to US HWY. 2 trail crossing.

Trail 8 from Bingo’s to Tula Crossing is good to very good. Please stay on your side of the trail and use caution on corners.

Trail 160 from Walmart to Montreal River(WI) is good to very good. This is a very scenic trail with spectacular views. ENJOY!! There is logging near the Lake Road area, please slow down, remember logging trucks have the right of way.

Trail 11S is good to very good. There are still a few thin spots on this trail and it also needs to have more brushing done. Please use caution. Once you cross the bridge within 2 miles there are some rough spots, they are snow covered but we still need more snow.

LAKE GOGEBIC AREA GROOMER REPORT was last reported on the 2/1/18.
Trail Conditions:
Good News: The DNR has given approval for us to reopen Trail 100 to East Shore Road which puts snowmobilers within a 1/4 mi of Lake Gogebic. Groomers are out on it right now and it is in good shape (4.5 mi from trail 13 to East Shore Rd).

Trail 13: Good to very good. Trail 100 is open and has been groomed from Trail 13 to the
East Shore Rd. From there you can follow left to Slate River/ Lake Gogebic and if you make a right you can run East Shore Road. Received some snow and hopefully, that will cover bare spots on the roads.
Trail 1 to Presque is in fair condition and recently groomed.
Not much base and about ½ down dirt are showing.
Trail 1 and 13 are being groomed frequently as we have stationed one of our groomers in Marenisco!
Trail 1 N/Corridor 8: groomed and in very good condition.
Trail 102 in good to the very good condition.
Trail 8 East has been groomed, because of weather, it could not be groomed all way. That will be groomed weather permitting.

Trails are fair to good. We do have some thin areas and icy corners so use caution. The groomers are running daily.

Trail 2 east of Watersmeet – to the 107 – good but thin in areas
Trail 3 north of trail 2 to bond falls – good thin areas and icy corners
Trail 3 north of Bond falls – good
Trail 2 west of Watersmeet- good with thin areas
Trail 13 south of trail 2 – good with icy corners

PLEASE STAY ON MARKED TRAILS. RIDING ON UNMARKED TRAILS CAN RESULT IN THE CLUB LOSING EASEMENT OF THAT TRAIL AND YOU POSSIBLE GETTING A TICKET…..
