Trail Report – : Bayfield County, Wisconsin – January 24, 2019

Reporter:BayfieldCounty

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 3 to 12 inches

Date of Report: January 24, 2019

Area Report:

General Countywide Report:
Most of the county received 3 to 10 inches of new snow earlier this week, resulting in improved trail conditions throughout. Even with the new snow, trail conditions remain variable, with hard bases and icy conditions still being reported throughout the county. Use extra caution when out on the trails. Also, please be aware of maintenance equipment on the trail, as grooming can occur at any time, day or night. Some swamp crossings may still not be frozen and there are some trails that have only received minimal amounts of grooming. Approach all wet areas with extra caution and be prepared to turn around if the crossing appears suspicious. Be wary of low hanging branches, wet areas, downed trees and/or limbs, and other similar hazards that may compromise the trail. Use extra caution, be prepared to turn around or find an alternate route and stay on the trails!

See below for area specific reports. For the most up to date report of trail conditions, please contact the local snowmobile club.

Drummond Snojacks: We received early week snowfall of up to 3″ and trails remain in good condition. All trails were groomed mid week with the exception of trail 63 north of Grand View. Trail 63 and Trail 4 north of Grand View, in the Mason area continue to be rideable, however snow cover is very light. Some bare areas in the Bibon Swamp. As a reminder to trail users, most of the trails in the Mason area are on private property. Please stay on the trail. Don’t cut corners or look for shortcuts.

Namakagon Trail Groomers: 3 to 6 inch base, with 3+” of new snow. Most of the trails in the area are in good to very good condition. Please expect grooming operations at any time, day or night.

Valhalla Area: Trails in the Valhalla area are in good to excellent condition. With up to 10 inches of fresh new snow over the past few days, trails are being groomed twice a week.

Iron River Area: Iron River area trails are in very good condition with the recent snowfall. The base continues to be hard and icy, so please ride accordingly.

Frosty’s Vintage Riders (Mason/Delta Area): With 2 to 3 inches of new, fluffy snow, trail conditions in the Mason/Delta area have improved. But there is still a general lack of snow through the Bibon Swamp and a hard, icy base on most trails. Be extra cautious when approaching icy corners and hills.

South Shore Trail Club (Port Wing, Herbster & Cornucopia Areas): Trail 1 between Herbster and Corny was groomed on January 23; Trails 40 & 41 will be groomed on January 24; Port Wing trails from Iron River to Touve Rd were groomed on January 23; all are in good to very good condition.

A portion of Trail 40 (Wally Polk) was recently plowed, but is still open. If riding this section of trail be aware of logging activity, including haul trucks. To get to Port Wing, an alternate route would be Trail 43 to Trail 66 to Trail 3.

Barnestormers (Barnes Area): All trails in the Barnes area have been groomed and are in good condition. The trail conditions improve when heading further north. Trail 31 south of Mulligan Creek Road remains closed until a few repairs are completed and conditions improve (more snow).

Waino Riders (Northwest Corner of the County): Trail 1 from the Tri-County Corridor to Highway 13 was groomed on Wednesday and remains in great condition.

Washburn Valhallers: Trail #13 from Washburn to the Tri-County Corridor was groomed today and is in nice shape with most bare spots covered from our recent snow. Nice and flat! Trail #13 from Washburn to Valhalla will be groomed 1/24/19 and is expected to be in good to excellent shape. Both trails should provide great (but chilly) riding into and out of the Washburn area this weekend!!

Trails in AC are open, except the trail from Marengo north to the East end of Ashland, that section is closed.  Trails are being groomed from Marengo South.  North of Marengo has been groomed. There is a detour on 77 by Cayuga.  Detour is posted.  We did get a few inches of fresh snow so the groomers have been out there on the trails.

The Tri-County Corridor is OPEN and groomed

As always please follow the snowmobile trail rules and regulations. Stay on trail, as much of the Ashland County snowmobile trail system uses private property and could be lost if the property owners experiences issues. As always operate with everyone’s safety in mind and report any hazardous trail issues that are observed to the Ashland County Sheriff’s Department (715-682-7023 opt 1) so that it can be forwarded to the appropriate service.

Snow, Snow, Snow!!  It just keeps snowing.  The trails are in fantastic shape and being groomed around the clock.  There will be low temps and blowing snow throughout the evening tonight and thru the weekend.  Stay back a ways from the sled in front of you and slow down, the blowing snow makes it real hard to see.  Remember to watch out for the groomers when out on the trails!  Once again, there will be a ton of riders in town, so please remember to drive safely out there.  Stay off all ice, stay on your side of the trail, slow down and enjoy all the Keweenaw has to offer, and leave the drinking for after the riding.

Trail 3 between Dollar Bay and Lake LInden will be closed for the season as well as Trail 122 and 121 (Freda Loop).  Trail 133 is temporarily closed due to logging.

Snowmobile Trail Conditions

Prentice Bush Benders 01/24/2019
We have received a few inches of snow over the last few days. This will help improve the trails somewhat but they remain in fair condition in the wooded areas and poor condition with minimal snow coverage in the open areas. They are still in early season riding condition with some rough spots so use caution when riding. As of today we will start our normal grooming schedule and will be out every day panning/grooming while conditions allow. The trails to the South and East have the most snow cover and all creeks and swamps remain frozen. There is logging on trail 181 East of Prentice and on trail 116 around County Road K. Ride safe and have fun.

Eisenstein Bushwackers 1/22/2019
Groomed all Bushwacker Trails 101,103,104-105,110,and 111. We didn’t get a lot of snow and switched to our new mogul Master Trail drag. Trails are good condition. The mogul takes the bumps off much better than the other drag. You can see this on here 105 trail is good get out and enjoy our trails Our club and our Neighbors the Sno Gypsies work very hard to give you the best possible ride. Enjoy and Thank you from the Eisenstein Bushwackers. keep speeds down enjoy the scenery

Kennan and Catawba 1/21/2019
Trails in the Kennan and Catawba have been panned or packed and in very poor shape and un-rideable west of intersection 100 to the Rusk county. Trail 94 will remain closed till we get snow.

Sno Gypsies 1/17/19
We Groomed 80 89 90 and 91 today we will be grooming 80 south to Boyer road and Toscobia trail tonight trails and fair to good condition all swamps are frozen and groomed enjoy Thank You from the Gypsies Drive responsibly ,enjoy

The Sno Drovers 1/15/19
The Sno Drovers’ trails in the Pike Lake area continue to be in fair to good condition. While the weekend traffic was hard on the thin snow cover, but they are grooming up well. There are rocks in areas that have made their way to the top of the snow, especially on 101 west from the lakes by the iron bridge and on 111 just north of Fish Trap Road. There are occasional bare spots, but not too many nor too bad. If we get just a few inches of snow, the trails should be great since they are nice and flat now.
Logging continues on Trail 120 south of the big swamp and Fould’s Creek Rd and on Trail 108 between Trail 101 and highway 70. Take these slowly and expect icy conditions and logging equipment.
