Trail Report – : Sayner, Wisconsin – March 14, 2023

Reporter:SaynerStar Lake Barnstormers

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: 8″ +

Date of Report: March 14, 2023

Area Report:

We had nearly a foot of new snow over this past weekend.  I groomed last night & have to say the trails were the best I’ve seen all year!  If you can get out & ride today, you’ll find amazing trails and limited traffic.

Weather changes things daily this time of year.  Tomorrow is forecast for 42 degrees and Thursday is 39 with rain.  There is potential for that rain to turn to snow by Friday.  Temps will back into the 20s for the weekend.  Trails will certainly degrade over the next couple days, but most likely still some good riding.  Conditions this weekend will totally depend on how much rain or snow we get.  It looks like we’ll get at least one more weekend with the trails open.  Keep an eye on the weather!

Late season weather has made some of our steeper hills too hazardous for the grooming equipment to navigate, so we have some sections of our system that we’ve stopped grooming.  At this point in the season, we just aren’t going to risk injury or equipment damage.  So, if you find areas in the Barnstormer’s system that are not getting groomed, that’s why.

Stay safe & enjoy what’s left of the season!!

Groomed up Trail 1 in the Marenisco area and March is definitely in its “lion” phase with a good dump of 8” or more with it still coming down as I type. There is a whole lot of snow out there folks and the trails are in peak condition for this time of the season. Get out and ride!

!!TRAIL CLOSURE!!

Trail 1S on the north end of Lake Gogebic where the highways of M-64 and M-28 intersect 4 miles west of Bergland is closed for the remainder of the season as logging crews move in. We thank our logging landowners greatly for the access they provide and sledders you have to respect the closures! You can get to Marenisco using the lake.

If you’re thinking about coming up to ride – don’t think too long!    Come on up while everything is still good!!!

SNO-EAGLES
EAGLE RIVER TRAILS
Good to Excellent

Trails in Eagle River & ALL of Vilas county are in fantastic riding condition!  The 5-6+ inches of new SNOW over the weekend over the existing base have the trails Good to Excellent. Plenty of moisture so trails are laying down really good after grooming.  It’s COLD this morning. 13 below!  Heading to a high of 33.  Time to ride it when we got it!

Not much more to say about the trails.  They are in fantastic condition. The road crews have been out plowing & there are high banks.  The groomer guys were out last night & are cleaning out the road crossing.  They have a few to complete yet so be aware of that.  Also with the high banks be sure to stop & be careful crossing.  Vehicles hard to see. Otherwise trails are WOW!

Nearly a full grooming last night.  Here are trails the were not groomed:

Trail 1 to Eagle Lake trail
Trail 10E  spurs

With the number of accidents & fatalities this season will keep reminding you:

When you come upon a group of sleds in front of you on the trail.  Passing them can get you in trouble.   Have been seeing this all winter.  When an entire group passes, by the time the last sled passes, a sled could be coming from the other direction.

Remember as you ride & meet a groomer the equipment is NOT able to leave the trail due to it’s weight.  Pull over & stop.  Wait for direction from the driver.  Give ’em a thumbs up.  They groom so we can ride!

Please ride on the right side, slow down, limit alcohol & no off trail riding.

Eagle & Catfish Lake trails are still marked.  With the new SNOW & wind expect some drifts.  If a lake is not marked it probably is not safe.

Trail Report – : Rhinelander, Wisconsin – March 13, 2023

Reporter:Hodag SnoTrails

Trail Conditions: Excellent

Snow Cover: Nearly a foot of new snow!!!

Date of Report: March 13, 2023

Area Report:

Well, who would have guessed we would have received nearly a foot of fresh snow during the all day snow event on Sunday.  It just kept, snowing and snowing and snowing.  We had all of the groomers out doing double runs yesterday to try and pack, pan groom everything up for this week’s riders.

In all my years of posting the trail conditions, this is a first.   Putting the trails in “excellent” condition in the third week in March.  Take a midweek break from work and ride like the wind….

Thursday look ugly with rain in the forecast, then more snow on Friday.

We are continuing to groom nightly.   Still need to drive defensively out there, with all the snow, some of the trail signage is covered.  The groomer drivers are digging them out as they see them.

Barrels have been removed from Boom Lake (in Rhinelander).  Please consider that ride the river at your own risk.

What a season that doesn’t want to end.
