Date of Report: March 21, 2019
Area Report:
Our trails are in fair condition but will be closer to poor by Saturday afternoon. This is the time of year you will see conditions change daily. The sun is out in full force today which means road crossings are bare, sunny areas are getting soft and you will see pools of water on the trail. You may even see some swamp sections start to open a bit by Thursday afternoon.
THE STATE FUNDED SNOWMOBILE TRAIL SYSTEM IN VILAS COUNTY WILL OFFICIALLY CLOSE EFFECTIVE 11:59 P.M. SUNDAY MARCH 24th, 2019 FOR THE SEASON.
News and Reports:
A huge thank you to all donors, sponsors, volunteers and those who came out to the Rendezvous 2019. It was a huge success!
Snowmobile Information:
The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters snowmobile club was founded in 1968 and is one of the oldest snowmobile clubs in existence today in Wisconsin. Located in the very northwest corner of Vilas county, Manitowish Waters borders the Lake Superior snow-belt country. With average snowfalls of 150 inches and over 25 miles of professionally groomed trails, the area is one of Vilas County’s top winter vacation areas.
The Manitowish Waters trail system is a unique hub network directly linking into 5 other trail systems. With Minocqua/Woodruff to our south, St. Germain/Eagle River to our southeast, Lake Gogebic to our north, Presque Isle/Winchester to our northeast, Mercer and Hurley to our northwest and Lac du Flambeau/Price County to our west, our area residents and guests can choose from a variety of daily or overnight destinations for scenic riding with excellent pit stops along the way.
The Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters maintain an active grooming schedule for the area’s trail system. Coordinated efforts with the surrounding communities provide continuous smoothly-groomed trails in this northwest sector. The Sno-Skeeters own and operate some of the newest grooming equipment on the market today. Support the club by attending their special events or contributing to the “trail pigs” at local establishments along the trails. Or show your support by becoming a member!
Enjoy, and please ride responsibly and safely!

Trail Conditions: Poor
Snow Cover: 14″
Date of Report: March 21, 2019
Area Report:
As of this past Monday, March 18, grooming on all trails was suspended. With the ongoing warm weather, sun, and rain over the last week, we have rapidly lost our trail base, creating large stretches of exposed ground and rocks on the trails. Swamps are also opening up in places. Please use caution while riding, especially considering current conditions.
Taconite/David Dill State Trail
Snow: 7-22”
Base: 0-3”
Groomed: Yes
Condition: Poor
The Taconite is in poor condition. The trail base is thin due to warm weather and heavy trail use, and there are many stretches of exposed rock and ground throughout the trail, especially on hills and corners.
The spur trail leading from the Taconite to the Oasis Bar and Grill in Britt has been rerouted due to landowner issues. The reroute goes from the Taconite east of Hwy 53 (opposite side from the Oasis) to Peppard Rd, crosses Hwy 53 at the Peppard Rd Jct, and follows the ditch south to Peel Rd and to the Oasis.
Putnam/Fishing Lakes Trail – is groomed and in poor condition. Be aware of logging operations on and around the trail shortly after the trail crosses the West Two River trail bridge.
Lake Vermilion- Soudan Underground Mine State Park Trail- are in poor condition.
Tomahawk Trail – is groomed and in good condition.
Arrowhead State Trail
Snow: 7-22”
Base: 0-3”

Trail Conditions: Poor
Snow Cover: Less than 4-6″ in most areas.
Date of Report: March 21, 2019
Area Report:
Effective Midnight on Tuesday, March 19th, 2019 we are closing the majority of trails under our management.
Operating on closed trails is both illegal and may jeopardize our ability to use those lands for future seasons.
Due to the recent warm temperatures and significant rainfall the trail base has eroded and the thawing snowpack has resulted in reduced quality trails.
The following Douglas County managed trails remain open at this time: Wild Rivers Trail from the Harroun Road to the CTH A/C Parking Lot
Wild Rivers Trail from the Douglas/Washburn Co. Line to 300 feet north of CTH Y in Gordon Gandy Dancer Trail – MN stateline to Patzau
When leaving Douglas County or operating on trails managed by others within Douglas County, please contact the neighboring county, state, or trail operator to its regulations or status for ATV operation before entering the property.
Thank you to all the members of the Northwest Trails Association for the tremendous amount of work it takes to open and maintain the trail network.
THIS REPORT WAS PREPARED ON MONDAY, MARCH 18TH, 2019.
Due to the deteriorated conditions, all trails are being closed to ATV/UTV operations.
Douglas County Cross Country Ski Trails
All trails maintained by the Douglas County Forestry Department are closed for the season.
Superior Municipal Forest – Slow, but still in good shape despite how warm it has been, a few bad spots. Use caution. (As of 3/20/2019)
After Hours Ski Trail, Brule River State Forest – The main trail system was tracked and range from thin and crumbly to full depth. The skate lanes still have some equipment ruts but are flat and nice in other areas. Sally’s Classic Trail is still tracked from last week. Until the temperatures cool or until there is workable snow, grooming efforts will be suspended. Warm days and cold nights are making it increasingly difficult to maintain a high quality ski experience. (As of 3/19/2019)
Pattison State Park – The overlook trail has been groomed and tracked this week. Warm temperatures and rain have prevented the other trails from being groomed and tracked at this time. There is half depth track throughout the trail system and conditions may change rapidly with the warm weather. (As of 3/18/2019)

EAGLE RIVERS TRAILS
FAIR – POOR
Trail 10W/13N aka Wisconsin River Bridge trail is
CLOSED FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON
March 21 2019 7:10am – 32 – High 47
Well the chances of getting to the end of the month are not looking as good as this did this past weekend. The Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance had it’s monthly meeting tonight. The 11 clubs that make up the Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance have unanimously voted to close the trails on Sunday, March 24 at midnight. So if you are going to ride do it quickly.
Sunny skies have taken a toll on most trails in Eagle River. The warm days & cold nights had turned the SNOW into really crystallized icy SNOW. Frozen in the morning then soft as the day went by. Looks more like a frozen snow cone on the trails in the morning. The base is still hard ice in most areas except in town. Snirt & dirt appearing as well.
No grooming.
These important updates continue if you choose to ride this last weekend of the season:
There is 1 logging operations going on where there is a need to use parts of the trails. Trail 13N by Deep Lake Rd. Plus utility work on 7 near Sugar Camp on the high line.
EAGLE LAKE TRAIL & CATFISH LAKE TRAIL ARE MARKED & OPEN. Lots of slush so for the more experienced rider at this point.
The 2 one-way trail areas are 10E from the ERRA Sports Arena all the way out to Nicolet Mini Mart. The other is the 13’s up near Buckatabon Bridge & Bauer’s Dam area.
Well we almost made. Been a great season. Here’s to another SNOWY 2019-2020 season!
