Groomer Report

Overall Story:

Monday 12/23 12:00 pm CST:   DON’T FEAR THE HEAT!  Yes – it was 45 degrees yesterday.  Trails remain in very good to excellent condition system wide!  There is just so much snow on the trails it’ll take a lot of melting & rain to start making us nervous.  Our entire system has been groomed each night since last week Wednesday.  Trail 160 is now open!  Temps don’t look to be nearly as warm as last weekend and that is good.  Post Christmas riding should be the best it’s been in many many years.

WARNINGS AND NOTICES:   We continue to see a spike in off trail riding issues.  We had riders nearly cause a HAZMAT event by running over a Oil/Fuel distributors fill lines.  We had riders hit fences and take out fence posts a LONG ways away from trails.  We are begging riders, there is 1-million acres of public land east of Wakefield to off trail ride on – please save it for legal areas!

Trail 2 from Hurley to Ramsay US-2 Crossing:

Overall rating:  Very Good

Last groomed 12/23/19.    Please do not ride on side walks near Holiday and try to keep noise down in town.

Trail 2 from Ramsay Crossing to Wakefield:

Overall rating:  GOOD

Last groomed 12/23/19.  The entire stretch is in excellent condition!  Featuring a brand new section to enjoy this season, the club eliminated Prospect road route and moved the trail completely into the woods eliminating 1.5 miles of road route.  PLEASE STAY ON THE TRAIL AND RESPECT THESE LANDOWNERS!

Trail 2 from Wakefield to Marenisco:

Overall Rating: Very Good

Last groomed 12/23/19.  There is logging 4 miles east of Wakefield.  Please yield to logging traffic, they are working and you are playing!

Trail 8 from Wakefield to Tula Crossing:

Overall Rating:  Very Good

Last groomed 12/23/19.  Tremendous snow depth on this trail.  It is an unplowed county road and is a treat to ride!

Trail 160 from Walmart to Montreal River (WI):

Overall Rating:  OPEN – GOOD TO VERY GOOD

The trail was opened Saturday 12/21.  STAY ON THE TRAIL!!!!!!   This is our most scenic trail and is a treat to ride!  There are several scenic vistas on the trail such as Bald Mountain “NORTH” lookout viewing Madeline Island/ mouth of the Chequamegon Bay of Lake Superior,  the Bald Mountain “SOUTH” lookout viewing Gogebic Range (Powderhorn, Copper Peak), the Montreal River Gorge look out and finally the amazing Superior Falls Waterfall Complex.  Stay on the trail in the farm fields.  Over 25 landowners are involved to make this trail a reality, please respect them and ride responsibly.

11S (Wakefield, MI to Winchester, WI):

Overall Rating:  CLOSED

CLOSED FOR THE SEASON DUE TO LOGGING OPERATIONS THAT THE CLUB WAS UNABLE TO FIND A REROUTE AROUND.

11N (Wakefield, MI to South boundary Rd/White Pine):  Closed indefinitely.  Seeking local community support with ideas on how to reopen it.  200 yards of private property closed this 25 mile trail.

Gogebic Area Grooming  12/20/19  No new report

Trails are being groomed daily in most of the Lake Gogebic Area.   Trails are all reporting in good condition.

We received over a foot of snow so far this week and our temp this morning was 12 degrees.   Temps are going to warm up this weekend, but look to drop back down early part of next week.

Groomers are reporting all trails in the Lake Gogebic Area to be in very good  to good condition and wet spots have frozen over.

Trail 1N:   Good to very good

Trail 1S:  Gogebic Area Grooming and their volunteers were out for 2 days clearing Trail 1 on the West Shore.  There is enough snow to make snow bridges to get across the wet and washed out areas and hoping to have this trail open by Christmas!

Trails 13 North and South All trails on South end being groomed and very good to good.

Past the Root Cellar, there is more logging. You will have to travel on East Shore Rd approximately 2 mile further then before to get back onto trail 13.  A new reroute will take place.  Please follow the signs marked 13.   (Permanent Re-Route for the 2019-2020 Season).

Trail 8W between Bergland and Wakefield – most all wet spots have closed over.  Good condition.

Trail 8W:   is open and snow cover is good.

Trail 102: trail 102 has been broken and there is a lot of snow.   There is a new reroute about 4 miles before

trail 11.  The trail is marked well and the reroute was a very nice turn out.     (Temporary Re-Route)

Trail 100: Logging is happening between Stagecouch Rd and the Slate River (very end of Lake Gogebic)   Marshall Creek Bridge has been fixed so you can get to Marenisco from trail 100. (Permanent for 2019-2020 season)

Trail 1 from Trail 100 to Trail 8Closed until further notice as logging is taking place until the end of December.     You still can access the Gogebic Lodge and we plan to maintain it up to the Lodge, so we can get up and run.

Please stay on the trails,  respect private property, do not drink and drive, and above all else, drive safely.  The signs on the trails are there for rider’s safety so please DO NOT remove or destroy them.

Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – December 24, 2019

Reporter:haywardlakes

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 16 inch base

Date of Report: December 24, 2019

Area Report:

Hello Riders!

As you know the Sawyer County trails are OPEN and the Chequamegon Forest Trails are OPEN and  until more freezes each trail varies in how rideable they are depending on where they lead. The county land and forest trails as well as the Tuscobia are where you’ll find the best riding. We have approximately a 16″ base. Not a lot of new updates but just to touch base we are still trying to freeze up the lakes. We had a couple of good cold days that was helpful but just not enough to make them ready. There is a lot of slush on the lakes insulating the good ice so they are not freezing fast. This includes swamps. The lakes that have been staked so far are: Moose, Nelson, and Spider.

Again, even though lakes and swamps are not ready yet you can still have a great ride in lots of riding areas, it just takes some planning ahead! Look at the map and highlight those riding routes that you find in wooded trails. You will not run out of trail!

Also an update on trail 5 from Tuscobia north, this is now open. It is not groomed and needs to be packed.  There is a beaver dam just north of Hwy 70 that needs to be packed down, so ride with caution.

The trails in the Seeley Hills area and 3/5 towards Lost Land Lake and Moose Lake have been groomed several times. The Tuscobia in the Winter area has been groomed. Also the Tuscobia from Birchwood to Couderay has been groomed as well as to the Rusk, Washburn and Barron County lines has. The Wild River Trail from the Rice Lake area up is open. Trail 8 on the Sawyer County and Washburn County side will be groomed on Wed. Trail 3 gates in the Birchwood area are open. Like any other private property trails that you find the gates to be open ride at your own risk as they are not groomed yet and there may be down debris from the recent snow storms this month, if the gates are not open please absolutely do not go around them.

Have fun!

Trail Report – : Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin – December 23, 2019

Reporter:Manitowish Waters Chamber

Trail Conditions: Open

Snow Cover: 18-20 inches

Date of Report: December 23, 2019

Area Report:

Warm weather and heavy traffic has softened the trails. There is still tons of snow out there but we are getting reports of it being  bumpy. That’s to be expected. It’s going to take some grooming and colder weather to firm them up again. As a reminder, respect the deer on the trail and give them time to get off the trail. Trail conditions are fair to good.
Remember to ride right, use hand signals and stay on the marked trails.

For your own safety and the safety of the next rider (who may unknowingly follow your tracks),

stay off of the lakes.

Trail Report – : Boulder Junction, Wisconsin – December 23, 2019

Reporter:boulderwi

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 18-24 inches

Date of Report: December 23, 2019

Area Report:

Trail report for December 23, 2019 – Overall fair to good for early season riding. Since the opening on Friday we have had a lot of traffic on Boulders trails. We had some warmer weather in the high 30’s the last few days and our base is still forming. We started off with fluffy snow lacking moisture and not packing well so when we groom it a dozen snowmobiles with paddle tracks just rip it up. We expect the continued warmer weather adding moisture but without sub-zero temps at night it won’t stiffen up the trails. Groomers have been out throughout the weekend. A good wet snow with a freeze up would be great but the forecast is not calling for it. Just be patient and be thankful we do have snow currently on our trails. Please use extreme caution in all areas! Stay on marked trails!  Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride. Hope Everyone has a Merry Christmas!

We had to close trail 106 (corridor 19) to Iron County on Saturday, 12/21. While the Price County trails are groomed and in great shape, the trail after it crosses to Iron county travels through a swamp that is not frozen enough for them to groom. We had a rider sink in the mud and water, needing help for recovery. Alternative routes should be used.

Prentice Bushbenders Trail Report 12/19/2019
The trails are open but are in rough early season condition. We have only been out with our compactor and have not been able to pan or groom any trails yet due to numerous wet spots. We have been out breaking these spots up trying to get them to freeze down and are gaining on them so hopefully we will be starting grooming operations around Christmas. If you ride please use caution. Merry Christmas from the Prentice Bushbenders.

Park Falls Sno Gypsies 12/18/2019
Trails around Park Falls are slowly getting groomed. Several of the swamp areas are still partially open. Please when riding in the ungroomed areas of the swamps ride wide to pack the trails.

Price County has 500 miles of trail, maintained by 9 volunteer clubs. You’ll find beautiful scenery and wildlife along the trail system to enhance your experience.

Trail Report – : Oconto County, Wisconsin – December 23, 2019

Reporter:Oconto County Tourism

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 6-8

Date of Report: December 23, 2019

Area Report:

Red Arrow Snowmobile ATV Club (Townsend) – They were freshly groomed last night (12/22), so early riders should have a great ride. Groomers say that the base is getting soft with the warm temperatures. We will keep an eye on things and hope grooming is not interrupted by the warm temps. If the snow is to warm it no longer flows through the drag and plugs it up. So we can’t groom. Let’s hope for colder temps and some fresh snow to freshen things up.

Paul Bunyan Riders Snowmobile Club (Lakewood) – There are a few trail sections that are temporary closed. The section from the grade to Maiden Lake is closed due to open water as well as the section by Phil’s Philling Station that goes through a swamp. This section is re routed on the road. Use caution.

Chute Pond Snowmobile Club (Mountain) – Chute Pond Snowmobile Club trails are open, in fair “early season” condition. Heavy traffic and the warm weather have beat up the trails this weekend. Groomers will be out doing what they can to smooth things out- but the best advice is to take it easy and slow down a little out there. Exceptions (see map): trails that will remain closed at this time are from INT#451-INT#453 (from east of Hwy 32 behind the Junction to Jack Pine Rd), and from INT#447 north to the 18 Corridor trail near Cooked Lake (the northern pipeline trail). DO NOT ride the closed trails- they have not been cleared from the July wind storms because the swamps are still wet and have not allowed equipment to get in to work on those areas yet. The closed areas are tangles of fallen trees in a swampy area- you don’t want to go there.

As for the rest of the trails, “early season conditions” means there will be some bumps, dips, and ruts to deal with as the groomers continue to work on the trails. Be aware that any off-trail riding- even to take one ski off to “grab a little loose snow”- could be dangerous. The July wind storms have devastated many areas of our forested trails, and there are many trees and limbs on the ground just off the edges of the groomed trails. Please stay safe- stay on the groomed trails.

Riders are urged to reduce speed and ride with extra caution, as the forest and the trails look very different since the storm. There are numerous logging operations that will be ongoing throughout the season. Please use extra caution in these areas. No Chute Pond trails cross any lakes or rivers- and ice has been slow to form on most area lakes. Riding on frozen surfaces is not recommended. You are encouraged to carry a portable hand saw if possible, since limbs and branches continue to fall onto and over the trails. But the good news is- there are many fun and interesting miles of trails- waiting for you to ride. See you on the trails!

Bagley & Brazeau Joyriders – Friday 12/20/2019 some of the trails will be groomed and open.  The trails that will not be groomed will need your help. Please help to pack them down with your snowmobiles.  There maybe some areas that have soft areas and our groomers have to wait until these area firm up.  There are some trails that will not be open at this time, until corn is removed.  The area is near Klondike south to intersection 421.  Also the trail from Suring to the first intersection 407 will be closed as well.  As for now the trail leading to Chute Pond is also closed.  This trail belongs to Chute Pond’s club.  I will include a map which will show the trails that are open. To see the trails that are open and that are closed click on Newsletters then the second Dec 2019 is Trails open news release.

Gillett Sno ATV Riders – We will be opening up the railroad grade from Shawano line north, but none of the spur off trails will be open at this time due to water and lack of snow in some places. The grade is in fair early season condition with a few icy spots that have frozen up on the sides of the trail by Town Hall Rd.

Chase, Lena and Oconto Falls are CLOSED.

We started off the season with about as much snow as we have ever had on opening day in a LONG long time. The trails have started off spectacular but it is pretty warm today and sunny. This has really softened up the snow and the paddle tracks are tearing things apart. We will go back out and level things back up but the start of this coming week and for the entire week is, supposed to above freezing again. This will NOT help anything hold up.

As is per normalSTAY OFF THE LAKES UNLESS THEY ARE MARKED!!! If you cross a marked lake, stay by the markers while crossing!!!
