Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: White

Date of Report: December 27, 2019

Area Report:

The Frosty Club groomers were out last night and trails are looking good at this time. Finally temps cold enough to freeze up the trails and allow the grooming to work its magic. Trails tomorrow should be good and then we will have to see what Mother Nature has in store for tomorrow night and Sunday. Riding in the rain is not fun so lets keep our fingers crossed.

The snowmobile trails in the Rhinelander area are in early season conditions currently. They will get worse before they get better. The vast majority of the lakes are not marked (and should be considered unsafe). Be careful out there if you chose to ride this weekend.

Hello Riders!

Lake Reports: While the warm weather is not what we want to see we are grateful that we had the amount of snow that we had that still allows us to have good wooded trail riding. We would like to have full transparency so the following info is to help you get an understanding of the conditions and why the wait on our lake riding.

The large amount of snow is good, actually great, but when trying to make ice and freeze the base. Good because we have great trail riding but bad because our lakes were not froze with a good layer of ice when the large snow fall fell. That large amount of snow fell on the small amount ice we had creating an insulation so the freezing process on the lakes is slow. The large amount of snow on the unfroze lake also creates slush. Now after the last few days of warm weather some of the ice that was there has opened. The few lakes that had been staked such as Spider and the Tiger Cat Flowage have had stakes fall down due to the slush melting. The weight from the heavy snow on the ice puts pressure on that ice weighing it down and water comes up those holes from the stakes or holes that were created with the ice trying to form, almost like a drain backing up. This water that comes up and the slush that was on the lakes that has melted makes it hard to decipher what is standing water and what is open water. Many area lakes also have had the issue of inconstant ice. One bay may have 10-12″ while another 5″ and another 2″. So you may be on one side of the lake and you have great ice but the other side may not and they will not stake until the whole lake is safe. We wish we could report a better report on the lakes but not yet, even the few that had been reported as staked we recommend not riding on them. Our primary goal is safety. We will update as soon as we hear any lake activity, but no target date yet, perhaps Monday’s low temp and into next week will give us a better idea. But please remember you can still get to many locations without the lakes.

With the bad news over the GOOD news is the wooded trails are still GREAT! We have a 12-16″ base and you will find a lot of good trail riding out there, just peek at the map and map out your route prior to your ride.

The weather looks to continue to be mild through the weekend but then we drop again below freezing and see some fresh snow fall. We anxiously await those colder temps!

Surrounding counties: Washburn, Bayfield and Price are open. Ashland and Rusk are partially open and Barron is closed.

Keep checking back as we are the hub for your most up to date trail reporting and will report as soon as any change! Until then hop on those beautiful wooded trails! A big thank you to all the volunteers out checking lakes and trail reporting!

Winter Snowmobile and All-Season Trails (As of 12/27/2019)

This week the region experienced an unseasonal warm-up.  The snow has compressed due to the warmer weather.  Clubs are still reporting good riding conditions through most of Douglas County. The weather, however, has created some wet spots. These spots are still passable, so please be aware as you are traveling through these areas. Clubs have been working diligently to get the trails open and approximately 80% of Douglas County trails are currently open. Clubs are still working on clearing trees, packing trail bases, and grooming.

PLEASE check the trail you intend to use is open and do not trespass on private property. It is critical that we respect the landowners who allow us to utilize their property.  It just takes one owner to deny the use of their land for a trail to be permanently shut down, so please be courteous and wait for the trails to officially open.

Area Report:

Trails are in good to fair conditions. They are still soft and some corners were down to dirt last night. We were able to get out and groom last night which we hadn’t been able to the past 2 nights because of temperatures and some rain . We also have some more warm weather and rain coming so there may be a few nights we will not be able to groom coming up this weekend.  A portion of trail 12 will be closed as the swamps behind the cemetery are still open water. The last I heard Buckatobon and pioneer were still not marked and unsafe but North Twin is marked. Please be safe out there and remember be respectful of your fellow riders . Please ride safe and only as fast as conditions will allow you.  Ride Right – Ride Safe.  Thank you your trail boss Chad.

Snow Cover: 18-24 inches

Date of Report: December 27, 2019

Area Report:

Trail report for December 27, 2019 – Fair to Good. The snow on our trail system has been melting the last few days and is expected to continue to melt over the next few days. With the increase of traffic this weekend and adding warm temp with rain on Saturday night the trails could degrade quickly. Our groomers have been and will be out in the middle of the night when the temps are below the 30’s to groom and do what we can do to make the trails better. Snow is expected Sunday night with cooler temps early next week. Please pray for more snow and subzero temps. Please use extreme caution in all areas! Stay on marked trails!  Remember to be safe, ride right, and enjoy the ride.

Area Report:

Our trail system is open with the exception of the trail noted below. We are experiencing a warm up and the trails have plenty of snow on them to handle it. They are a bit slushy in areas. Grooming will be done as temperatures allow. We need some cold weather. Road routes are becoming bare closer to town. Snow is in the forecast for the next few days. That will help.

Alternate trail 13 to sugar camp from rice lake road to sugar camp trails is closed until further notice. It is not safe with running water in the swamp.

Swamps, some are good, some are bad. There are a few that we still cannot groom yet. They are safe to ride, or we would have closed that trail.

Lakes, they are not marked and will not be marked until they are safe.

If you come across a tree that has fallen or something that you may see unsafe, please message us on Facebook. Please try and get the trail or the tin(trail identification number) that are located at all intersections.

Please be safe out there, it has been a horrific fall getting the trail system open this year with all the storms. We have thousands of hours getting trails ready for your safety and enjoyment.

Don’t forget this Saturday December 28th starting at noon is our chili cook off and meat raffles at pine isle. Hope to see you there. $6.00 donation gets you all the chili you can eat.

If you like our trails, be sure to put a few dollars in our donation boxes in your favorite establishment, if you see something you don’t like, message us on Facebook and let us know, we will do what we can to fix it.
