Reporter:Holly t

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: Thin & crusty frozen in most areas. 1-6 inches

Date of Report: January 11, 2021

Area Report:

January 11  – 6:02am 21 degrees  – High of 28 today – Low tonight of 19

Trails are in on average Poor to Fair Early Riding Condition

Little of no change in the Eagle River trails that remain in Early Riding Condition with conditions at Poor to Fair. Hard frozen ground covered with an ice base in most areas. Crusty frozen snow. Lots of snirt. Choppy conditions. The ROW trails have a bit more snow but everywhere there is plenty of snirt & dirt. Especially at road crossings & on the north side of roads. Traffic on the trails is sparse.

With the conditions as they are, grooming in Eagle River has been halted until there is SNOW.

Temps have popped up to the high 20’s to mid 30’s during the day.  Mid to high teens at night.  Weather guys forecasting next SNOW this coming Thursday with a 60% chance & Friday with a 50% chance.  Far out so it could change.  Stay tuned.

Catfish & Eagle have been marked by businesses on the lake. This includes the spur to Eagle Waters. Stay by the markers to be safe.  Some surface slush on Catfish.  All are SNOW covered.

Bummer of a report once again this morning.  Sure wish it would SNOW & get colder during the day.

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: need more

Date of Report: January 10, 2021

Area Report:

Many thanks to Rob and Anthony for taking the groomers out Saturday night and they were actually able to do some good. There are some poor sections and some pretty good sections–especially out west. Please ride safely as the corners are icy and there are still ruts in places where we have not been able to fill them with the limited snowfall. Stay on the trails as we do not need any unhappy land owners—without them we have NO TRAILS.

Trail Report – : Phelps, Wisconsin – January 10, 2021

Reporter:Phelps Snowmobile Club

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: 5″- 7″

Date of Report: January 10, 2021

Area Report:

The Phelps trail system had been groomed coming into the weekend.  Lack of snow to work with has left the trails in poor riding conditions.  Grooming operations will be paused until more snow arrives.  Trails are open and caution should be used.  As a reminder, if out on the trails and you come along logging operations, Please give the right of way to the loggers and their equipment.  Not only are those areas dangerous, but lack of good safe riding could lead to the trail closouers i that area or a reroute around it.  Also, I know how fun back country or off trail riding can be.  But here in Phelps and Vilas county, it is illeagal and could cost us the loss of trails on private and possible public property.  Remeber the old AWSC saying: Stay on the Trail, It Never Fails.

Trail Report – : Sayner, Wisconsin – January 8, 2021

Reporter:SaynerStar Lake Barnstormers

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: Minimal

Date of Report: January 8, 2021

Area Report:

Well folks, don’t shoot the messenger!  This morning I shared Oneida County’s 1/7/2021 announcement that their trails would open on 1/9/2021.  Now, on 1/8/2021 they have issued a statement that they WILL NOT be opening their trails!  We’ll keep you posted as we get new updates, but it’s tough to stay current when they change their announcements!

  • Logging operations are continuing throughout the northwoods and in many areas where snowmobile trails are located.  Loggers have first priority!  PLEASE be respectful of them and make every attempt to stay out of their way.  DO NOT engage with them.  Loggers have a legal right to close any snowmobile trail where they are working.  They are being cooperative with the clubs and working with us the best they can.  PLEASE do not give them reason to close the trails.
  • There is absolute minimum base on the trail.  Be prepared to encounter many ruts, holes, rocks and little snow for hyfax lubrication.
  • Hintz’s North Star Lodge is currently closed.  Therefore, we have closed the trail leading to their establishment.  If and when they are open for business, we will reopen that trail.  Please respect them by not riding across their property.

Thank you for your patience and support while we await more snow.  Ride RIght and Stay Safe!

Revision………………

Oneida County trails will remain closed at this time.  After more research on conditions, weather, trail bed sustainability, landowner requests, it has been decided to keep the trails closed at this point.

Once conditions improve, the trail opening will again be reviewed.

We are sorry about any inconvenience.  It has been a season of difficult choices so far.  We try to make the best decisions for everyone (there are many variables in the mix). Please be patient.

Snow has the ability to blanket our issues………

Thank you

Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – January 8, 2021

Trail Conditions: Fair

Area Report:

Long Lake is now marked and they will groom that area tomorrow!

Just a quick update before the weekend. Nothing has changed since our Monday night update other than a few groomers went out and did what they can. We have not received any new snow but have not lost any either. The groomers were out from Nelson Lake to the Seeley Hills, the Moose Lake area and the Round Lake to Lost Land Lake area. South of the Flowage there are awaiting more snow before sending groomers out. The groomers that lead to LCO and Whitefish will not be out until those two lakes can be staked. There is no ETA on those at this point. We will update as soon as there is any insight.
We had a long time groomer/avid rider out yesterday checking trails in these areas of mention and they were pleasantly surprised, they rated most of those trails as good and rideable. We certainly need more snow and it will come, although doesn’t look until next week sometime but you can most certainly ride this weekend. Those riders put on about 125 miles and rode in the Round Lake area to the north through the Seeley Hills towards Lake Namakagon to Moose Lake to the Flowage and back down towards Round Lake. They rated Bayfield County as being good as well.
Perhaps take this weekend as an easy, relaxed ride opportunity and enjoy the sights! Our northwoods has been encased in frost and the views have been breathtaking! What a perfect way to get out of the house, away from current events and reconnect with the outdoors!

New bridge on trail 18 from Callahan lake to Tiger Cat Flowage is complete and trail is open. PLEASE RIDE WITH CAUTION. There are stumps that are off trail so please stay on trail and SLOW DOWN. We need more snow before this trail can be groomed. A special thanks to those that put in many man hours to build and install the bridge.

Trail Report – : Spooner and Washburn County, Wisconsin – January 8, 2021

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 1 – 5″

Date of Report: January 8, 2021

Area Report:

All Washburn County Snowmobile Trails are open at this time. Trail conditions are fair to poor with a 1 to 5 inch snow base. We do have early season type of conditions and some trails may not be groomed yet. Please use caution on lakes as those conditions are not completely safe at this time, the ice conditions vary on each area lake. Clubs are working hard grooming and maintaining trails, so please exercise caution and watch for active trail grooming and trail maintenance. Fingers crossed for a good snowfall to get the trails in great conditions!
