GTS Trails app shows groomers out in the last 24 hours
Nightly grooming continues. Going to list them this morning.

  • The “grade” Trail 10/13 through town
  • 10/13N to include section that cross over the Wisconsin River snowmobile bridge
  • 10W/7 that heads west from Wisconsin River snowmobile bridge & connects to Sayner trails & west Conover trails
  • 17N to 1N that takes you the Eagle Lake boat launch
  • Alt13/3S to Three Lakes turn around

Suggest buying a Sno-Eagles trail map to help with location of trails. Plus download the GTS trails app  It is available at the App Store.

Trails really could use more SNOW. As of 7:08 this morning it has started to SNOW with a thin covering at this point. With the temps at 27 it will take some time for it to stick. Forecast is still for 5-8 inches.  Thinking the 4-5 of actual SNOW on the ground is a better bet.  SNOW followed by very cold temps.  Starting tomorrow through next week highs will be single digits or even below zero highs for the day. Below zero every night for the next week. Winters back.  Just in case KEEP DANCIN’

Right now conditions run on average Fair with some Good & Poor especially at road crossings.  The one-way parts of 10E are pretty snirty even dirt.  Groomer were out prepping for the SNOW. Getting the base flattened.  Same conditions on 17N.  70W of town will really improve with new SNOW it is snirty & gritty, especially up on the hill across from the Wisconsin River.  Alt13S to Three Lakes, 10W/7 are in pretty good shape, some burn through in the real open areas.  All in all new SNOW followed by frigid temps will bring the trails back into shape.

Been writing this all season but off trail riding continues to be a problem throughout Vilas county.  What this is doing is jeopardizing trail easements & will cause trail section closures.  Please once again stay on marked trails.

Catfish & Eagle Lake trails are marked with orange reflective barrels.  Please stay by the barrels to be safe.  The lakes are marked by the businesses on the lake so stop in & thank them when you’re out riding.

Iron, Oneida & the northern part of Forest that surround Vilas along with all Michigan trail are OPEN.

KEEP THINKING COLD & DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE!

Area Report:

Snow base (in inches):  4-12 inches

Status (Closed, Open, Partially Open): Open

Condition (Poor, Fair, Good, Excellent): Good to Fair

Not a lot of changes to report. Trails remain in good to fair condition with some poor areas where there hasn’t been enough snow. There’s a decent snow storm in the forecast for Thursday into Friday which should improve trail conditions. Stay warm out there!

The same trouble spots still remain:

  • The Grand View and Mason areas didn’t receive much snow and sled traffic could damage farm fields. Please use caution.
  • Trail 1 along the South shore is rough but passable.
  • The trail into the City of Bayfield will not open this year, but we’re hopeful for next year.
  • Trail 1 to the casino is open with a re-route. It’s a bit rough in spots so use caution. The re-route utilizes the right of way so please respect private landowners and follow the signs and groomed path.

Namakagon Trail Groomers: Trails remain in fair condition as of 2/3. They have all been groomed on 2/2 & 2/3 and plan on going back out after the snow fall!

Barnes Barnestormers: Not much has changed since last week. The trails held up well despite the heavy traffic and no new snow. Trail 7-17 around town poor to good, bare corners and hills. Trail 17-18 in good condition. Trail 31 is good south of trail 18 intersection. Trail 31 south is plowed for logging south of 43 road. Let’s hope for some new snow.

Drummond SnoJacks: The Drummond area received 2” of new snow last Sunday but only a thin base remains. New snow forecast Wednesday night into Thursday and colder temperatures will improve conditions. All trails will be groomed again before the weekend. Overall conditions are good to fair depending on use.

Iron River Area: Trails in the Iron River area are in fairly good condition. Tri County Corridor continues to be in very good shape with some light rocks surfacing

Washburn Valhallers: Trails in the Valhalla area continue to be in fair to good condition. Active logging on Trail 1 and Trail 31.

South Shore– Port Wing, Herbster & Cornucopia: Trail 1 on the south shore is still poor and in need of snow. Trails 40, 41, 43 and 66 have been groomed and will be done again Thursday 2/4 and remain good to very good!

WAINO: Waino Riders groomed Trail 1 to Tar Paper Alley on Monday. Lack of snow turned him around at that point, but the trail is decent going South to Brule.

Area Report:

Groomer Silas was out there making the trails nice and smooth before the highly anticipated snow that is coming tonight thru Friday! He said the trails were ridden hard but there was snow to move around and fix the burnt out corners and they groomed up nicely. Will be nice to have more white snow on the trails rather than that brown sugary snow. COLD coming after the snow so we should be ready to ride excellent trails in Land O Lakes soon.

Trail Report – : Sayner, Wisconsin – February 3, 2021

Reporter:SaynerStar Lake Barnstormers

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: Minimal

Date of Report: February 3, 2021

Area Report:

It looks like all of your snow dances could pay off!  As of this morning, the forecast is 6-8″ throughout the day tomorrow and into Friday.  This would make a vast improvement to our current trail conditions.  Keep your fingers crossed and we’ll keep you posted.

Meanwhile, we’ve been grooming nightly and will continue to do so.  We are not always able to cover our entire system every night, but we are out there.  The majority of our trails are still in really good condition.  Heavily traveled sections are in poor to fair condition simply because there is nothing but snirt left to work with.  Trail 15 between intersections 201 and 202 is in desperate need of new snow, so should be greatly improved over the next couple days.

There are always questions about the portage between Plum and Star lakes.  Remember, lake crossings are not officially part of the trail system, and that includes the portage.  Therefore, this is a NON-FUNDED section of trail.  We are still trying to groom this 2 – 3 times per week even though we get no funding for it.

Speaking of funding; please join us at Murmuring Waters on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 2:00 – 5:00.  This is our annual chili dump fundraiser.  Delicious chili and many raffle baskets!  You won’t be disappointed!!

  • Logging operations are continuing throughout the northwoods and in many areas where snowmobile trails are located.  Loggers have first priority!  PLEASE be respectful of them and make every attempt to stay out of their way.  DO NOT engage with them.  Loggers have a legal right to close any snowmobile trail where they are working.  They are being cooperative with the clubs and working with us the best they can.  PLEASE do not give them reason to close the trails.
  • The trail base remains thin.  Be prepared for some scraping, rocks, and ruts.
  • Hintz’s North Star Lodge is currently closed.  Therefore, we have closed the trail leading to their establishment.  If and when they are open for business, we will reopen that trail.  Please respect them by not riding across their property.

Thank you for your patience and support while we await more snow.  Ride Right and Stay Safe!

Trails really could use more SNOW and it looks like Thursday is the day!  The totals keep changing.  There are some models showing 5-7 inches.  With the temps up at the start of the SNOW thinking it will take some time for it to stick.  So I’m thinking more like 4-5 inches is a good bet. SNOW followed by very cold temps.  Many days next week highs will be single digits or even below zero highs for the day.  Winters back.  Just in case KEEP DANCIN’!

Nightly grooming continues. Easier this morning to let you which trail where not groomed.  Trail 70W to the St. Germain turn around; Trail 17S to Sugar Camp turn around. Trail 1N which is off of 17N were not groomed.  Suggest buying a Sno-Eagles trail map to help with location of trails.

Right now conditions run on average Fair with some Good & Poor especially at road crossings.  The one-way parts of 10E are pretty snirty.  Groomer was out prepping for the SNOW coming Thursday getting the base flattened.  Same conditions on 17N.  70W of town will really improve with new SNOW it is snirty & gritty, especially up on the hill across from the Wisconsin River.  Alt13S to Three Lakes is in pretty good shape, some burn through in the real open areas.

ONEIDA COUNTY trails are now OPEN.  Report is that all lakes are marked.  Be sure to stay be the markers & do not cross an unmarked lake trail.
