Trail Report – Monday, 12/27/21: The Vilas County Snowmobile Trail System is OPEN! Our area received over 5” of snow last night and another 3-5” for tomorrow. Our groomers were out on Thursday 12/24 and groomed our entire system and opened all the gates in anticipation of todays 8:00 a.m. trail opening. Please keep in mind that the early melt down significantly reduced our base and our corners may be icy. With the new snow expected in the next few days, our trails should be in good early season riding conditions. Enjoy our trails, be safe, and check for an updated report on Wednesday 12/29.

Vilas County trails open tomorrow, Monday December 27. The operative word for our trails is caution. Hornshoe president Keith worked our entire system today. We had a considerable number of ruts from vehicle traffic that needed to be leveled, and with the minimal snow, did not leave a lot left to the imagination. The areas in the woods have some decent snow in spots on trail 5, but 17, the main grade, is very thin.Trail 1, Stearns Lake Road, will not hold up to traffic yet. The minimal ice on the pavement is soft. There is no snow on the shoulder. The forecasts vary, but we are projected to get anywhere from 4-8″ of snow tonight. We also stand to pick up some more in the follow couple of days, and there is a snowmaker brewing later in the week. We may be slow out of the blocks, but we could gain some ground in the next couple of days. I will post again tomorrow after round #1. Mark

12/26/2021:
Tiger Cat and Spider Lake are staked, some of those stakes may tip but the crews will double check this weekend and next week and make sure to reset any. Moose Lake is staked. Monday crews will be out on the Chippewa Flowage, Callahan, Round Lake (big and little, Osprey) will be Tues and Wed, Lost Land Lake, LCO, Grindstone, Whitefish and Sand also Monday. No report on Lake Hayward yet, we will get a report from that club next week as they will stake Round. As you know Lake Hayward can be tricky with the current. The trail was shortened on Lake Hayward last year for our safety, it no longer goes by the bridge. We’ll update Lake Hayward next week. Last report of ice on Chetek and Connors Lake was about 4-5”, by the end of next week they should have some good ice
, we will update the status of that area of staking when crews report back.

Area Report:
The Vilas County Trail System will open for the season at 8 a.m. on Monday December 27, 2021. Trails are in early season form with some areas not groomed due to low swamp areas that have yet to freeze enough to hold the weight of the grooming equipment. As of now, snow conditions are less then ideal. The good news is that snow is in the forecast tonight -Tuesday with possible accumalations between 6″-10″ of snow. Just what the trail are in need of. All Lakes are not safe to ride on untill they have been marked by our local businesses. Please watch your speed and Don’t drink and sled. Watch the corners for they are icy and stay to the right side of the trail. Enjoy your time in the Phelps area. If you are not a member of a snowmobile, please concider joining. We can alwys use more members to help with our trails.
