Trails are not yet open. The Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance meets this Wednseday and will be discussing trail opening in Vilas County. When the trails ope, lakes are considered to be unsafe for travel and should not be used. We are looking at a mild week with highs in the mid to upper 40″s with a chance for rain. Highs Friday drop to the upper 20’s and should stay that way through next weekend. Please chck back by next Thursday for more information on trail opening.

The Northern Hornshoe Club will start panning today. We have about 12″ on the ground now with a projection of 8-10″ heavy, wet snow tonight. I may be in the groomer Monday, and we should have a better idea by then if we are go for launch on the 15th, or not. Trail 1, Stearns Lake Road, has a nice icy cap right now thanks to the ground being warmer when it snowed. I pushed some snow for the neighbors two days ago, and the ground was not frozen. That, and warm weather projected for next week, will make it interesting for sure. I follow a couple of local groups from Fence Lake, and Vilas County. This morning one person asked if trails are open, and another responded, ” Join a club and find out.” That is good advice. I am a part of two clubs. Even if you do not have opportunity to be active, you learn a lot about what it takes to make our sport great. Landowner relations, signing, brushing, grooming- all volunteer. We work with the tribe, our township, and our county. We also have relationships with local business that help support. I have gone to the Vilas County Alliance meetings, and I hear what more great volunteers do working with the state. It is an amazing group of people. But at any rate, I will post trail updates as we get closer to the green flag. Mark

Area Report:
Last weekend brought us a good 8″ of fresh snow. The Sayner/Star Lake Barnstormers have been out panning trails and removing trees that have recently fallen. The forecast is calling for more snow this coming weekend, but being followed by a week of warmer temps.
While more snow is usually a good thing, right now it is slowing the freezing of swamps & lakes. We really need more freezing before more snow!
As far as trail opening goes, a few things need to happen first. We have to get through the final stages of deer hunting, which ends December 12. All of the trails need to be officially inspected. There are a fair amount of trails in the county that go through swampy areas, and until these are sufficiently frozen, the trails won’t be ready. All 11 clubs in Vilas county have to be ready, as we all open as a group.
Please support all of the clubs by participating in their fundraisers! Here’s a list of what’s coming up for the Barnstormers. You can also get more info at http://www.saynerbarnstormers.com.
