It’s -1 out this morning with snow flurries and 2-4” of snow predicted for the rest of the day. Last night, we groomed 2W, 8W, 51, 6E, and 15N. Early this morning, we groomed 8E, 11, and 15S. Our trails are in good condition and the new snow and cold temps will help preserve them for the upcoming week. Our club ride to Mercer on Wednesday was good and all area trails were in fair to good condition. The road routes will improve with the snow coming today.

Enjoy our trails, be safe, think snow! Check for an updated report on Monday, 2/20/22.

Snowmobile Report – February 18, 2022
The Snowmobile Trails in Ashland County are Open.  Conditions are FAIR to good.   Trails continue to be groomed.  Sparse in some areas.  Watch for machinery on Trail 21-13, south of Cayuga, trail being rebuilt by Forest Service.  Detour:  Snowmobilers go South on 181-183 intersection and can get on the trail by the little stub off 181 that goes to the trail.  Watch for logging where trail crosses Mud Line on Trail 12 (out of Butternut) and CAUTION, keep an eye out for chunks of dirt and rocks.   We are hoping for some more snow today…we will keep you posted!  Please stay on the trail. Lots of Ashland County snowmobile trails are on farmers land, please be respectful so we don’t loose our easement to their property.  Order your Ashland County Snowmobile

EAGLE RIVER TRAILS GOOD to FAIR

February 18, 2022 17 below zero at 5:55am – High 20 – 0 tonight

Cold one this morning. As it gets light temps will probably drop a little more before heading up to 20 today.  The good news is SNOW moving in today 1-3 inches along with gusting winds of up to 45 mph.

if you’re riding early today dress warm & let someone know where you’re headed. Trails are all over the place for conditions. Icy corners & still also in straight aways.  Ride Right to be safe.

The Groomer Tracking System AP (GTS) shows groomers left the Groomer Barn along Hwy 45N near the Snowmobile Derby Track last night & groomed.  Unsure of which trails as there have been some glitches in the system. Yesterday I reported 10W/13N weren’t all groomed & it turns out they were. Sorry. Hopefully all will be corrected soon.

Catfish & Eagle lake trails marked & OPEN. Stay by the orange reflective barrels.  DO NOT think the entire lake is safe.  Several sleds have gone in the water this season far from the barrels.

Short report again this morning as I’m riding cross country with a group of 15.  This morning we head east from Park Falls back to Eagle River. Check out News and Reports below.

Please KEEP DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE!

See ya on the trails when we get back home!

News and Reports:

15 riders on 14 sleds left Monday morning at 9:30am from the Ice Castle in Eagle River on the yearly weekday away.  This year is a 5 day trip.

We headed west on Trail 70 to 17S to 7 aka Paint Ball Field making our way west heading to Park Falls.  Stopped for lunch at the Bear Bar at the entrance to the Lake Tom SnoFleas trails near Lac du Flambeau.  Headed from there to Minocqua & west.  Arriving in Park Falls at the Northern Light Motel for the night.  Rode a little over 100 miles.

Yesterday, Tuesday we headed north to Washburn the town in Bayfield.  A bit of a struggle as there were many detours & re routes in Ashland county.  But we arrived safe & sound in the late afternoon at the Washburn Inn overlooking the Big Lake!  Along with a great big appetite. Another day of about 100 + miles.

Wednesday we headed from Washburn toward Bayfield. When Tom & I had sled issues we turned around & headed back to Vallhalla Bar & Grill to wait for the utility truck & trailer to pick up Tom’s sled.  Rode back on my sled double back to the motel in Washburn.  Rest the group headed north to Bayfield putting on about 80 miles.

Yesterday we left Washburn heading back to Park Falls. Took a slightly different route back. To avoid the re routes & detours. We rode double back for most of the trip. Switched out the last leg of the ride with a rider. Riding her sled. She rode double with Tom.

Today we head out at 9am east back to Eagle River & home.

Hello Riders!!
Welcome back to the weekend, and a 3 day weekend for many of you! We had fresh snow last Friday and cold temps so we have had great conditions! The groomers have been out rolling all week every day!

We had our monthly Alliance meeting and trail captain meeting this week and reports from all trail captains and clubs is that their groomers are out, no major equipment issues this week. They report trails to be flat and in great condition! There are a few thin or icy spots here and there in some corners and the areas you get on/off the trail for some road riding. The roads will have some worn areas as well but do not travel on those areas far, just to connect to a wooded trail and you should be riding to the farthest right.

Lakes are great!! Again, may be thin where you enter/exit the lake but the trails are great! With more snow there are some moguls on some lakes close to the stakes as lakes cannot be groomed. There may be some broken or down stakes on the lakes, if you see any that are problematic please report to us where so that we may repair. Speaking of lakes, VERY important! Stay on the staked trail as much as possible. If you are getting off the stakes to go to lodging, a residence or an establishment please, please ride at a safe speed and be very observant of any ruts and/or plowed roads. There are some plowed roads to ice shacks and trucks that have driven to their ice shacks and with the snow being deeper there are bigger ruts. Those ruts and berms freeze solid and become very hard to see and if you hit one of those it can be very dangerous. So please ride with caution on the lakes when going off trail.

Another EXTREMELY important note! STOP AT STOP SIGNS!! FULLY STOP! We have witnessed so, so many riders flying through the stop signs. In addition to us witnessing this, law enforcement has also witnessed this being a huge issue this season. This is unacceptable! You do not run through stop signs on the road why would you on the trails? We shouldn’t have to warn this. Law enforcement will be watching this very closely and you will receive a hefty citation. If it does happen do not chastise law enforcement, you broke the law. Please STOP, it takes no time out of your day to stop.

Lastly, Birkie week starts next week. There are some trail closures in the town of Hayward and Lake Hayward. We will update on the specifics and direction to get gas in town if needed. Otherwise there are no other trail closures. The race runs through the Seeley Hills, the snowmobile and Birkie trails do cross each other so you may have some delays but not much. Please be respectful of these athletes, let them pass as they are timed and have trained very hard and cheer them on! A pretty remarkable race to witness! We will update the details and a reminder after the weekend.

As always thank you to all volunteers and all of you riders who enjoy and respect the trails of Sawyer County! We are so appreciative of you all!

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 3-7

Date of Report: February 17, 2022

Area Report:

The Langlade County snowmobile trails overall are in fair to good condition in both Zone A and B.  Due to the lack of fresh snow and relatively heavy trail use, there are thin spots throughout the trail system, mainly on the high traffic trails.  Icy spots and corners are also present throughout and snowmobiles should use caution and slow down, especially on corners and bridges.

Everyone got a little bit of fresh snow last week which was much welcomed. There’s some more snow in the forecast for early next week. Trails just might be in the best condition of the season in the next week or so. Just need temps to stay cold. This weekend is the Northern Pines Dog Sled Race in Iron River which uses part of the Tri-County corridor. A reroute will be marked so keep your eyes open for that. Just a reminder to all to please respect private landowners and stay on the trail. Stay on the trail or stay home!

Some trouble spots to note:

  • The Wally Polk Trail/Trail 40 near Port Wing and Herbster is closed. Flag road is a suitable re-route.

Namakagon Trail Groomers: Last week we received 4-5″ of “good” snow! Sitting on 4-5″ base. Trails are in good condition.

Barnes Barnestormers: Thanks to the snow we received last Thursday, the trails are in great shape. We will be grooming all week, should be a good weekend to ride.

Drummond Sno-jacks: All trails have been groomed as of Sunday (2/13/2022) night. Will start again this Friday before the bar stool race weekend, the Drummond snow jacks club event, and groom through into Sunday. All trails are in great shape lots of good things said from snowmobilers.

Iron River: Trails in the Iron River area are very good but still dirty on south side of highway 2 trails north of highway 2 are much better. Tri-county corridor is excellent. Sled dog race is on corridor west of Iron River. Detour south on trails 22 and 24.

Washburn Valhallers: We still have very good snow cover in the Washburn area and toward Valhalla.  Trails are grooming up nicely and will be another great weekend of riding.

South Shore– Port Wing, Herbster & Cornucopia: All south shore trails will be groomed by Thursday (2/17/2022) and continue to be good to very good!

Taconite State Trail: SLOW DOWN in the ten-mile segment from Ely to Purvis Lake, the trail is narrow here. The entire trail from Ely to Hwy 73/Side Lake is groomed and in very good condition. Watch for exposed rocks in a few of the big hills going west from Hwy 53. And be aware on the Taconite just east of Hwy 169, there is some slush on either side of the junction with the trail north to the Y-Store. 7-26 inches of snow with a 1-6 inch base.

Arrowhead State Trail: The trail is groomed and in very good condition. There is active logging on and around the trail north and south of the Hwy 115 crossing, so use caution in that segment. Also be aware of ice flows on the grade going north toward the Melgeorge’s spur from the Elephant Lake Rd. 8-29 inches of snow with a base 1-7 inches

Putnam-Fishing Lakes Trail: The trail is groomed and in very good condition. Watch for occasional rocks throughout the trail, mainly on the hills.

Soudan Underground Mine Lake Vermilion State Park Trails: These trails are groomed and in good condition. Watch for occasional rocks on the hills.

The Ely Area trails have all been groomed and in excellent shape. The Tomahawk trail is also in good shape. Riders should follow the stakes.

Bear Head Lake State Park  There has been significant drifting in areas near the lake.    Snow depth is 17-19 inches.    Snowmobiling conditions are excellent, trails are groomed with a 2-4 inch base.
