Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – December 15, 2022

Reporter:haywardlakes

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 0-5

Date of Report: December 15, 2022

Area Report:

While we love to see new snow, we actually are doing more of an ice dance than anything right now. This heavy snow will put an insulation on our lakes and swamps and slow down the freezing process until it gets really cold. This weekend moving into next week most days call for cold temps and that is a good thing! Many lakes did just freeze over within the last week and have much more freezing to do before staking can happen.

Many private gates don’t begin to open until at the least Dec 15th due to hunting but also do not open until trails are ready to groom so while today is the 15th most will not open yet. This reason is many of these trails lead to swamps/marshes and lakes which are not safe yet, therefore groomers won’t open them and groom them yet to not mislead riders to unsafe areas. The other trails that are on county land also will not be groomed yet as the ground needs to freeze more and this new snow needs to freeze, set up and then be packed down to create a good base that can withstand all season, at this point the snow and ground are still too soft. Also adding some groomers that have low amounts of snow in their areas will need about another 8-12” before they groom to not damage equipment.

The Chequamegon National Forest has not announced a date they will open yet but we are in contact and will update when the forestry decides to open.

While we are in the middle of December and it feels like time, we are a tad early yet and we are making good progress, slowed a bit with the heavy snow but still progressing along. We just need the cool temps! We will update again next week once the temps lower and we can see what Mother Nature has in store for us! Until then we will keep our Christmas wish for ice and Christmas riding!!

Trail Report – : Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin – December 14, 2022

Reporter:Toulish1

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 4-6″

Date of Report: December 14, 2022

Snowmobile Information:

As of this report at 3:00, the storm has developed as predicted. Freezing rain has coated the roads that already had a decent glazing, so I hope that we have a solid base on the trails that run roads, then pile on some snow. Current indications are the bumble snow monster should bounce about 4PM today. We are working on trail markers for the lakes at Hornshoe command center tomorrow morning (Thursday), and hopefully by then I will have an idea when we may float the trail open balloon, if it has any gas to float. Until then, thank your clubs that are out working to get trails in shape, doing repairs the heavy snow may cause, and consider joining and giving us a hand. A big thanks to sponsors, and land owners. Trail Report – : Lake Gogebic | Bergland, Michigan – December 12, 2022

Reporter:AJ’s Walleye Lodge

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: Need snow

Date of Report: December 12, 2022

Area Report:

Lake Gogebic area trails took a real beating this past weekend as there was a lot of traffic out on the trails.  Groomers did not go out last night due to temperatures and will head out tonight only if temps drop below freezing.  Current forecast calls for a snow this week and a winter weather advisory starting Wednesday.  Great news as we can really use some snow!    Lake travel is not recommended even though there have been some sightings of sleds on Lake Gogebic.

Trail 1 South on the West side of Lake Gogebic:  will be out brushing and signing and will probably not get completed today, but it will be completed this week.

Trail 1 North: in good condition and has not been groomed the past 2 days.

Trail 13 South East opened up and groomed today as it was previously closed due to muzzleloading season which is now over.  Reported to be in fair condition with a couple of water spots.

Trail 13 North is the gem of our trail system – in great shape.

Trail 102 has been completely cleared; but it is in rough shape.  Very thin, dirt and wet spots in many area.  Use extreme caution.

Trail 8 West:  open water and wet spots.

Trail 8 East:  has been groomed.   Getting thin in some areas.

Area Report:

December 8, 2022 – 7:15am – 1 degree

First report of the 2022-2023.   Trails in all of Vilas County are still CLOSED.

Morning & it’s good to be back,

Trails in Eagle River & all of Vilas County remain CLOSED.  We need more snow in the south half of the County plus more COLD weather to freeze up the trails.  So before you start Doin’ The Snow Dance need you to THINK COLD!

Last week the Parks & Rec Supervisor began trail inspections.   There are 11 clubs in Vilas so it takes some time.  Should be completed by the end of this weekend or early next week.   Then it’s a waiting game.   Northern parts of the County have more SNOW than in the Southern part.   As in pass season it’s a waiting game.   Rep’s from each of the Clubs will get together & vote as to the opening date.  Then the Parks & Rec Supervisor would put out a PSA.   Stay tuned.

See Ya on the Trails real soon!

Trail Report – : Keweenaw Peninsula / Houghton-Hancock, South Range, Copper Harbor, Michigan – December 7, 2022

Reporter:Stretch

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 1″ base

Date of Report: December 7, 2022

Area Report:

It’s been a very slow start here in the Keweenaw. We have a little over an inch of snow and light snow today. Not much of an accumulation is expected but I’ll keep a close eye on it through out the day. The further west you go the better the conditions get with the Gogebic area having around two foot in places. Unfortunately I’m not seeing any big storms in the next 10 days but this is the U.P. and things can change in at any time. Keep in mind the Portage Lift Bridge is still up and generally does get lowered until December 15th or later so crossing over is not possible at this time. If you do come up we have a lot of standing water that needs to freeze up so always ride with caution.
