Trail Report – : Ely, Minnesota – December 28, 2022

Reporter:Ely Chamber of Commerce/Explore MN Visitor Center

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: 18 Inchs

Date of Report: December 28, 2022

Area Report:

Active logging is happening in several spots throughout the Grant-in-Aid and State Trail system. Please slow down and give trucks and logging equipment space.

Continue to monitor trail conditions online, as they may be changing daily:

Taconite State Trail: The Taconite has been groomed once from Ely to Tower and will be groomed again before this weekend. Use caution in the Ely-to-Purvis segment as it remains very narrow, and the segment through the swamp between Purvis Rd and Bear Head Rd/CR 128 remains ungroomed. We will be grooming further west along the remainder of the Taconite as ice in the swamps allows. We also continue clearing many parts of the trail that were made impassable by the heavy snow a couple of weeks ago. We are using heavy equipment to remove trees and brush in some places and hand-clearing in others. Snow: 14-26 inches with a base of 0-4 inches. Groomed: Partially Condition: Poor

Arrowhead State Trail: Along the entire trail, as with the Taconite, we will be grooming where swamps and ice thickness allow, and we will also be continuing to clear those parts of the trail with trees and brush from the heavy snow blocking the corridor. In particular, the Orr South Spur south to the Landing Spur is bad for brush and down trees. Also, the very northern part of the trail has been closed for safety reasons due to a groomer going through the ice in one of the swamps. The International Voyageurs snowmobile club grooms the very northern segment of the trail, so continue to check their website along with the DNR site for trail updates at www.ridetheborders.com.

Arrowhead Trail Snow: 16-28 inches of snow with a base of 0 inches. Groomed: No Condition: Poor

Putnam/Fishing Lakes and Lake Vermilion Park Trails: These trails are open, but extra caution is needed while riding. A few spots on these trails remain almost entirely blocked by trees and brush from the heavy snow a couple of weeks ago. We continue to work to open these spots up. Swamps and beaver ponds also have thin ice in places, even though we continue to pack them. High ground and dry swamps are still very rough, and ice in swamps remains inconsistent. If using the trails right now, please use caution and travel at your own risk.

Bear Head Lake State Park: With the grainy snow, campground loops and Beach Trail were packed and needs time to be tracked. Be cautious, as there are locations where the brush is encroaching on the trail from the heavy snow. Norberg Trail needs more snow and to be cleared of brush that the storm left leaning into the trail. Snow depth is 17-20 inches. Skiing conditions:  Poor trails are not groomed. Base: 10 inches.  Snowmobiling conditions: Poor, trails are not groomed. Base: 8 inches.

Trail Report – : Keweenaw Peninsula / Houghton-Hancock, South Range, Copper Harbor, Michigan – December 28, 2022

Reporter:Stretch

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 5″ – 6″ base

Date of Report: December 28, 2022

Area Report:

Now that the Christmas storm is over it’s time to clean up all our trails. Here in Toivola I measured right at 52 inches of fresh snow from the 17th through the 24th. All the clubs have been out in full force breaking open the trail system. Most have one pass at knocking down the drifts and panning them. Things are shaping up with 90% of the trails in good riding conditions. Just give the guys another day or two and we’ll be in excellent shape.

Trail Report – : Phelps, Wisconsin – December 28, 2022

Reporter:Phelps Snowmobile Club

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 12″

Date of Report: December 28, 2022

Area Report:

Trails are in Fair to good condition.  There is not much of a good base to the trails and heavy traffic causes the trails to deteriorate.  More snow is needed. Lakes remain unsafe unless they are marked.  Please use caution on the trails and watch your speed.  Warm temps in the upper 30’s are predicted for tomorrow.  A little cooler heading into the weekend.  More snow is needed.  Please enjoy the Phelps area and come back often.

Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – December 28, 2022

Reporter:haywardlakes

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 6-9 inches of snow

Date of Report: December 28, 2022

Area Report:

With approval from the forestry department, we are able look at a tenative ETA to partially open some areas HOPEFULLY Friday. We understand it’s hard to not hear a “yes for sure this date” but the safety of all is a huge consideration. Crews and contractors have been out clearing and packing. The biggest issues have been that much of the trees and branches are very large and were bent over into the trails creating walls and these trees must be cut up high for safety as well as for groomers and excavator’s to be able to fit through and continue forward so the most challenging is the need of large equipment to complete the task and the deep snow making the process slow.

Then of course the lakes, there is a lot of slush and many crews have been riding where they find it safe enough to pack that slush down, so it freezes and creates more ice. Again, crews that have a lot of knowledge and experience packing lakes and swamps safely during the day in hopes of creating/freezing more ice at night so please do not ride the lakes until they have been declared safe, staked and open.

We will update with a definite date as to when and where the partial opening will be as the week progresses.

Trail Report – : Spooner and Washburn County, Wisconsin – December 28, 2022

Reporter:Washburn County

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 10″+

Date of Report: December 28, 2022

Area Report:

Washburn County Snowmobile Trails will remain closed at this time. With the adequate snow conditions from recent snowfall, there are numerous reports of trees down along trails throughout the county. Clubs are out working to clear trails of debris and will continue to work through the weekend to resolve the issue. We ask that you stay off the trails until open to ensure the safety of the crews working as well as you own. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
