Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 4″ to thin

Area Report:

No new snow has been received since the last report, trails are holding up ok. Projected wintry mix Thursday/Friday may make for icy trail conditions. Clubs are reporting low snow on many trails. Low snow means rougher trails, please ride with caution.

We also are dealing with quite a few trail issues through private land, temp closures, hopefully. It is NEVER okay to go around a closed gate or trail closed sign. Clubs put in a lot of hard work securing these trails and working with private landowners. If you go on a closed trail, we risk losing the trail permanently. Detailed report from each club below.

News and Reports:

Apostle Island Snowmobile Club – All trails remain in rideable condition in the Cornucopia and Bayfield area very rough terrain because of low snow pack. The trail into Bayfield remains closed at this time because of landowner issues. Trail one from Happy Hollow to Echo Valley has bare spots in places and very rough. Trail 51 from the crosstown freeway to Jody Road will be rerouted because of Logging in the area watch for signs. Trail 40 remained in excellent shape to Herbster/Port Wing.

Barnestormers – Barnes area trails are groomed and in great shape

Corny Sno-Goers – See Apostle Island update above.

Drummond Dirt-Sno Jacks – Trails in the Drummond area have been groomed and are in Fair shape. The stick trail across lake Owen has not been put up as of yet, and ice conditions are unknown. Trail 63 from Drummond to Grandview remains rideable though a little thin, not enough snow to fill holes. North of Grandview towards Mason conditions deteriorate. Trail 4 from Mason to Sanborn is in poor shape. Many dirt clumps in fields, and even wooded areas are quite thin with snow. Trail 4 going into the village of Mason from trail 63 has been groomed but again thin conditions. Trail 4 from Mason to Delta remains temporarily closed with projected opening of January 1st.

Namakagon Trail Groomers – Merry Christmas to all! NTG trail system has been panned and packed with a good start to a nice base. All trails are open and in decent shape. We have slowed down grooming hoping for more snow, so you will find bumps. We don’t want to tear up the base we have. If we can keep the snow and not have any bare spots for sun to get there and eat our base up, we should have a great riding season. You may still come across a small rock or twigs. We appreciate your help in throwing them off the trail. Pay forward! Enjoy your Holidays and ride safe!

Northern Adventures – No new report

South Shore Trails Club – Trail 1 west to Waino and east of Port wing have been groomed, there are some areas where the brush still need more trimming but all areas are passable. Snow is thin and corner are slippery for the rain last week, please use caution in the corners. Trail 40, 43 were also groomed and will have fresh grooming by this weekend. Trail 3 and 66 will also be groomed this weekend, snow conditions are packed but thin at this time.

Waino – Trail 1 from Waino to Port Wing is rideable

Washburn Valhellers – Our trail system has been either rolled or groomed at least once with a start to a nice base. All trails are open and rideable with early season conditions. We have postponed our grooming, waiting for more snow, as we don’t want to tear up the base we have. Trail #13 from Valhalla to Washburn is still ridable but gets thin on #13 between Washburn and Ashland.

We represent the communities of CABLE, BARNES, GRAND VIEW, NAMAKAGON, DRUMMOND, IRON RIVER, DELTA, INO, MASON, BENOIT, WASHBURN, BAYFIELD, RED CLIFF, CORNUCOPIA, HERBSTER, PORT WING AND OULU.

The Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center is a great place to stop on your journey. Snowmobilers are greeted with a special area to warm or dry your gloves and hang your helmet while exploring the center’s displays and 5-story observation tower which showcases the area. You’ll find it near the Tri-County Recreational Corridor which runs from the City of Ashland in Ashland County to the City of Superior in Douglas County.

We are host to many scenic vistas in the Chequamegon National Forest as well as abundant wildlife including deer, wolf, black bear and elk.

Guilty of bragging about our super-groomed trails, our local snowmobile clubs continually make improvements to make our trails safe and more enjoyable for sledders.

Ashland County Snowmobile trails will partially open on Thursday, 12/25/25.Trails are panned but not groomed.

Trail #13-Highbridge south to Price County line.

Trail #11-Iron County line to Trail #13/77 intersection.

Trail #77-Clam Lake

Trail #9/25-Clam Lake north to God’s Country intersection which meets with Trail #90 to Bayfield County.

ALL ASHLAND COUNTY SNOWMOBILE TRAILS NORTH OF HIGHBRIDGE ARE CLOSED due to low snow depth.

Please remember this is early season riding. Trails are still in need of additional brushing, and swamps and creeks are not all frozen. please ride right, ride sober and ride with caution.

Reminder everyone that the Ashland Waterfront Trail is not open to motorized vehicles, including snowmobiles and ATVs. Anyone caught riding on the Ashland Waterfront Trail will be ticketed.

When snowmobiling please stay on the trail. A lot of Ashland County snowmobile trails are on farmers land, be respectful so we don’t lose our easement to their property. Snowmobiles may not be modified, or operated, to amplify or otherwise increase the total vehicle noise above the originally manufactured snowmobile noise level. Langlade County has received between 7 and 10 inches of snow on the night of Sunday, December 28, 2025. The nine Langlade County Snowmobile Clubs are out grooming the trails. With 550+ miles of trail to groom, it will take the clubs a couple of days to groom and assess the safety of the trails. Please keep checking back for the official opening date and time.

Snowmobile Trails in Langlade County, Wisconsin are developed and maintained by the Langlade County Forestry and Recreation Department, and 10 different snowmobile clubs in Langlade County. There are over 530 miles of state approved and user funded trails. It seems like just as we finish work from the last season, we are starting a new. By starting before the snow, we foster a safe, well-maintained snowmobile trail system throughout the county. The snowmobile clubs help make the sport more enjoyable and safer for everyone!

The Langlade County snowmobile clubs are a proud and dedicated group who would like to share their sport with you. As a snowmobiler, you will get a firsthand look at nature’s winter wonderland. Snowmobiling is a fun, healthful recreation for people of all ages. Nearly floating over the snow on a machine is a thrilling experience! Although joining a club isn’t a riding requirement, it is a great way to contribute to the sport. If you would like to join a club, please contact a club representative. Club contacts can be obtained from the Langlade County Forestry Department.

The Langlade County Wisconsin Snowmobile Council, organized in 1974, is compromised of delegates of all area snowmobile clubs. Including: Antigo Sno-Drifters, Bryant Ridge Runners, Deerbrook Bridge Runners, Elcho Sno-Devils, Lily Sno-Birds, Northwoods Boulder Lake Snow Goers, 100 Mile Snow Safari, Phlox Winter Knights, Polar Blazers, and Tombstone-Pickerel Sno Club. The Langlade County Forestry and Recreation Department, along with the Council, orchestrates the snowmobile and winter ATV programs for the county.

The snowmobile trails that traverse the county are primarily located on private property. Trails flow through highlands, hardwoods, pine forests, low lying bogs filled with spruce and tamarack, and wide-open spaces of frozen lakes and farmer’s fields. The clubs work very hard to obtain and retain these trails. It is imperative that riders stay on marked trails, and respect other people’s property; after all, they are who make it possible for you to ride. Without private landowners, Langlade County’s Trails would be a small fraction of what they are today.

Please enjoy the trails, but please use caution as some trail segments may be changed or rerouted. There are also some One Way trails through the Jack Lake area that are a great way to start your first timer on a sled safely. This way you don’t have to be worried about oncoming traffic. Some of the “Old Timers” : ) like that trail too!

Langlade County has an aggressive Snowmobile Patrol Program run by the Sheriff’s Department with help from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, which enforces Wisconsin Snowmobile Laws, such as, current registration, intoxicated use of a motorized vehicle, and the 55mph nighttime speed limit.

Every year snowmobiler’s can’t wait for the snow to fall, and are sad to see it leave. Langlade County has an excellent reputation on keeping the trails well groomed and marked. We have detailed maps that also include road names and city/town locations; Antigo, of course, being the hub of Langlade County. The map also includes intersection numbers, and pit stop locations, including, gas, food, bars, and hotels. There are also several parking areas marked on the map.
