Snowmobiling Information

Chippewa County is the home for over 300 miles of snowmobile trails, and New Auburn features trails that wind through the woods and farm trails that are especially enjoyable for its visitors. One can stumble onto many small but nice lakes that harbor bluegills and sunfish. The area is dotted with restaurants and gas stations on the way to New Auburn and the Bloomer area. There are many side trails reaching towards the lakes, Bloomer and Lake Holcombe.

The trails are particularly well-maintained and smooth. Riders will not cross many roads other than some nearing the little towns that lead up to New Auburn, where riders will have to do some ditch riding.

The main trail going into New Auburn will take its riders to Bloomer and then all the way into Chippewa County, where riders can go as far south as they please. There are many trails connected to satisfy the person that likes to ride long and hard, or riders can trail off and fish for bluegills.

The Magic of Winter – Sled the Vast, White Northland

Northern Wisconsin is a dreamland for anyone who is a fan of snowmobiling. If you want to elevate your snowmobiling experience, then the essentially endless network of well-groomed and well-maintained snowmobiling trails that Northern Wisconsin has to offer is something that you would not want to miss. The beauty of snowmobiling in Norther Wisconsin is that you are being catered to by local businesses and organizations that take pride in providing the best possible experience to their guests. They actively work on maintaining the trials and making sure that nothing causes any kind of concern to the guests.

The Minocqua area in Wisconsin is a shining example of this hard work that is done by snowmobile clubs of the area and volunteers from all walks of life. It provides you with a vast network of trails that when combined together form more than 1700 miles of some of the best snowmobiling trails that you will find anywhere in the country. These trials, apart from being the safest and the most groomed also are a majestic sight to behold. When you are riding your snowmobile on them, you will be blown away by the natural beauty that you will come across. It is almost as if you are not even on this planet anymore. The marvels of nature that you will come across during your rides on these trails must be seen to be fully appreciated. There are more than 1300 glacial lakes that you will come across on these trails. If you have ever ridden your snowmobile over a frozen lake, then you would know that it is an experience unlike any other. That is not all when you are done admiring the beauty of the frozen glacial lakes; you will be greeted by more than 233,000 acres of forests.

I don’t know about you, but this has me excited about a trip to Minocqua, Wisconsin during the winter season. Riding your snowmobile on well-groomed trails surrounded by all this stunning natural beauty sounds like an experience like no other. You can essentially veer off in any direction from the trails, and you will find yourself in well-marked and spacious routes that will take you towards the frozen lakes or the forest. And when you finally get tired of admiring the natural beauty that you are surrounded by don’t worry there are plenty of pit stops on the side of the trials that you can stop at for a breather. Go inside, leave your sledge in the parking area without any worry and mingle with locals and other snowmobilers. We do have to mention that we don’t drink and drive, though.

Area Report:

Lincoln County’s funded snowmobile trails(County Administrated Trails) in Zone 3 will reopen as of noon on Friday February 24, 2023. Lincoln County’s funded snowmobile trails(County Administrated Trails) in Zones 2 and 4 will reopen as of 8:00 AM Saturday February 25, 2023.

Trails in Zone 1 that are already open will remain open.

News and Reports:

Zone 1 Trails remaining closed due to a land ownership change are as follows:

Trail 86 from Intersection #25 to the Taylor County Line.
Corridor 21 from Hwy M north of Homestead Road to the Taylor County Line.

On trails where winter ATV use is permitted, trails must be open to snowmobile use for 7 days before ATV use is allowed.

All trails are closed to winter ATV use when the temperature is above 28 degrees F.

Trails may be rough, icy or drifted in some areas.

Be aware of Trail Closed signs, stay on marked trails only and respect private land.

Local snowmobile clubs remind riders to stay off lakes and rivers unless an officially open trail has been clearly marked by a club. If a water body is not marked, it is considered unsafe

Over the river and through the forest to Lincoln County we go! On those cold and blustery days, what better way to spend your time, then to bundle up and hop on your snowmobile. Lincoln County has over 400 miles of groomed trails, so your adventure awaits! During your journey, you will find all sorts of terrain, from farm fields to lakes, streams and the Wisconsin River to hardwood forests. We invite you to begin your adventure in Merrill, where friendly folks are here to help make your stay most pleasurable. We are conveniently located on Highway 51 where our 3 motels are located right on the snowmobile trails. Of course the trails connect with all of our surrounding county neighbors, so the length of your trip has endless opportunities. Plenty of pubs and great places to eat dot the journey.

Prefer to ATV? In the winter months, there are approximately 175 miles of groomed ATV trails. In addition, Lincoln County also offers a summer ATV trail. The trail is about 43 miles in length and connects with Langlade and Oneida County’s summer ATV trail system.

Looking for more winter fun? Merrill is home of the World Championship Ice Drag Races that are held on Saturdays during January and the first weekend of February. Street cars, bracket cars, dragsters and trucks take their racing skills onto a 1/8 mile strip of ice on Lake Alexander. 15 different racing classes, plus novices are welcome. Did you know that you can even snowmobile on the Wisconsin River to Council Grounds State Park where the Ice Drag Races are held?

What else is going on in the Merrill Area? The Wisconsin River offers some of the best ice fishing around. Enjoy cross country skiing? The Underdown Ski Area consists of approximately 33 km of marked trails, which pass through over 4,600 acres of Lincoln County Forest Land. There are also many hunting opportunities in the area. The Lincoln County Forest Land consists of 101,000 acres open to the public, not only for hunting but hiking, biking and camping too. Wildlife available to hunt during open seasons are deer, bear, grouse, squirrel, rabbit, turkey and waterfowl.

Kenosha is located in the far southeast corner of the state. Kenosha County Snowmobile Alliance of Clubs trail system connects to Illinois trails and the surrounding Wisconsin counties trails. The trail system is maintained by by volunteers from the six clubs that make up the alliance.

Manitowoc County is a great place for your next winter getaway. It features wonderful family attractions, restaurants, shopping, all sorts of outdoor fun and money-saving vacation options.

Find your fun in many forms: snowmobiling, snowboarding, cross country skiing, indoor ice skating, snowshoeing, and winter camping. Manitowoc is the home of 348 miles of state snowmobile trails including river trails which are maintained and groomed by local snowmobile clubs. Point Beach State Forest grooms 11 miles of beautiful cross country ski trails. There is space for winter camping as well. There are a number of lodges to host you and your friends. Warm yourselves up by the fire after a day of adventure. Other cross country trails can be found in Manitowoc’s Henry Schuette Park and Silver Creek Park, Camp Sinawa near Valders, Collins Marsh Wildlife Area, and more.

Winter snowmobiling excitement runs rampant throughout northern Wisconsin’s Vilas County. Hundreds of lakes and acres of state and national forest lands provide a winter wonderland for enthusiastic riders.

Land O’ Lakes, located on the border of Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula provides an excellent home base for your winter excursions. Trails to the north connect with the serene trail network of the Upper Peninsula. Corridor 6 guides riders across the northern section of Vilas County from Phelps at the eastern border, through Land O’Lakes as it continues on to Presque Isle.

Land O’ Lakes offers the pure enthusiast miles of groomed trails to the north in Upper Michigan and short trips to various Wisconsin towns to the south, east, and west. Ok, so not any earth shattering news on trails. “Fair to middlin”, BUT, the weather forecasts are changing by the minute. Weather channel is now saying up to 9″ for us Sunday into Monday. Heavy snow, high winds, power outages, impossible travel, dogs and cats living together-total mayhem. Whooohoo. My wife started following a Youtube channel months ago called ” Max Velocity”. Young guy, but he is pretty darn accurate. His map this morning showed up to 13″ in our area. Then he is predicting snow after snow after snow. He is not a snow junky like John Dee, so I hope he is accurate, not just messin’ with us kids. Stay tuned for more optimism. Mark

Snowmobiling in Juneau County is a lot of things. It’s shooting along a well-groomed trail with your friends on a clear, crisp day watching the pines and scrub oak whiz by. It’s traveling on a moonlight night with somebody special riding behind you as you wend your way to that favorite bar & grill. It’s stopping to watch a herd of whitetails disappear in a flash or listening to the sounds of the woods before moving on.

We have hundreds of miles of trails that are well-groomed and clearly marked thanks to the efforts of our local snowmobile clubs. You’ll enjoy the many changes of scenery as you travel through Juneau County. The southern portion (south of Mauston) has rolling hills, deep valleys and plenty of forest land. The area is part of Wisconsin’s ‘driftless’ region that was spared the destructive force of the last glacial period some 14,000 years ago. You’ll find quiet beauty and quaint cities and villages as you travel the region. The northern part of the county is much flatter than the south but has much more forested land. Pine woods are the primary feature but there’s lots of scrub oak and aspen to make your journey interesting.

The northern trail takes you through the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge with its large expanses of prairie and wetlands. Here, the endangered whooping crane is being trained to migrate to Florida and return to NNWR to help establish a breeding flock. Chances are they will be sunning themselves in Florida when you travel the refuge but if you listen really close, you might be able to hear their calls.

For those of you who crave competition, several of our businesses on Castle Rock Lake sponsor sanctioned time trials on the ice during the season. If the ice is right, you can even traverse the lake to visit the eastern shore but we urge you to be careful. It’s a mighty big lake and it takes a while for it to freeze over so it’s safe to use.

We encourage you to come and visit us during the snowmobile season and find out why we say, ‘Juneau County is really worth a closer look.’

Snowmobiling Information

Almost every snowmobiler in the Midwest is aware of the fantastic winter playground found near the the Iron River area of Bayfield County. Hundreds of miles of wilderness trails provide tours through this area’s natural beauty, beckoning riders to return year after year.

Bayfield County welcomes winter snow enthusiasts to their winter paradise. A special treat for riders can be found on Trail 63, which travels from Hayward north through Cable, Drummond and Grandview as it continues on toward Mason. Along this trail riders will cross three refurbished railroad trestles, the 200 foot Namakagon River Bridge, 585 foot 18 Mile Creek Bridge, and the 325 foot White River Ramblers Snowmobile Bridge, each providing an awesome view.

Trail 7 traveling east from Cable brings riders to the scenic Lake Namakagon, the 10th largest natural lake in Wisconsin. From here a trek south on Trail 8 provides an excellent opportunity to view wildlife as riders travel along the Rock Lake Semi-Primitive Area.

Trails lead in all directions in this scenic Chequamegon National Forest region offering unlimited choices. When staying in this area, snowmobiles are the only transportation you will need since almost everything is accessible via snowmobile. Excellent lodging with roaring fireplaces and great food can be found trailside through out this region.

The Iron River Area is your premier snowmobile destination for Northern Wisconsin. We offer miles and miles of “smooth as a baby’s behind” trails and the friendliest lodging, dining, and entertaining establishments in the state. Many, many folks tell us that we have the best trails they’ve ever ridden on!

All of this and more is set against the winter splendor of the Chequamegon National Forest. With almost a million acres, the National Forest offers the best in Midwest snowmobiling without the crowds of more widely known destinations!
